It is a very little apartment, but clean, nice and well equipped. The young owners are particularly kind. I really liked to stay there, though it was only for one night. They made me wish to go back in winter too!!

Beautiful and stylish common room, with lots of comfortable seating but unfortunately no kitchen facilities. Large, clean washrooms and shower facilities. The girls' dorm was very cramped, felt more like a ship galley, and there wasn't much space for larger luggage, but I peeked in the mixed dorm and it was quite spacious. The steep steps up to the rooms made me a little nervous!

Friendly and charming employees make hanging in the common room a real pleasure, and the hostel is easily walking distance to Sapporo's entertainment district. Be sure to ask for ramen recommendations!

Room Tip: The mixed dorm is MUCH larger and spacious than the female dorm!

This hostel is located about 6-minutes walk from the Hosui-susukino subway station, 2 stops away from Sapporo station. It actually took me about 20mins to locate the hostel, but I only have myself to blame for my bad sense of direction and my own poorly drawn map.

Time Peace is a very small, dimly lit place, with only 2 dorm rooms, 1 for females-only, and the other mixed. The female dorm has 6 beds and 1 special attic space; the mixed dorm has 8 beds and in comparison seems a bit more spacious. There are 3 toilets and a shower room each for male and female. The layout of the hostel is very compact but everything looks new and superbly clean. You will get sheets for the bed, and a small hand towel for free rental (big towel is available for rent at 200yen).

The owner Jin is very helpful and friendly, and he speaks great English. The lounge area is very cozy and furnished with quaint items and furniture. Guests can help themselves to coffee and tea, and toast is supplied for breakfast. There is a bar and a Mac for free use. Wifi is available but only at the lounge area. Since only a small number of people can be accommodated, you'll get to meet a few other guests and chat with one another. Jin helps to make the atmosphere really relaxed and casual. He will also be able to help you with sightseeing tips and recommend you good cafes/restaurants depending on your preferences.

Just checked out of there this morning. Nice and cozy little place, only wish it could be closer to the city centre though. That said, it is a mere 2 subway stops away from Sapporo Station, and walking takes about 20 minutes so that's fine I guess.

As the previous reviewer said, you get a small locker, your bunk, linens and a small towel. Baths and the loo are separated by gender, with hairdryers, thoughtful cotton buds and Muji Cleansing Milk, Shampoo and Body Soap for the ladies (not sure about the gents?). Room's a tad bit small though, so luckily I was practically the only one in the room - more than enough space to pack my stuff.

The beds were so mega comfortable I overslept almost every morning. And even on the bottom bunk, I could sit up comfortably instead of hitting my head when I get up every morning. How awesome is that!

Fuji-san and co were very friendly, and even introduced me to their favourite places to eat etc. When I wanted to check out early (8am!), Fuji-san helped me to do so without any complaints.

Wouldn't recommend for you to visit Sapporo in November though, seems like a lot of places are closed / events yet to happen e.g. Sapporo TV Tower is closed for renovation, Sapporo White Illumination due to start the following week (saw the workers putting the lights up).

Time Peace Apartment is a really great and comfortable hostel.

Jin, the owner, could not be more welcoming or friendly, and we found ourselves comfortably settling into the relaxed vibe of the place. As a fellow traveler himself, he understands what people are looking for in a great hostel. Because Time Peace Apartment can only accommodate a small number of people, it is easy to meet and chat with other guests in the small but cozy lounge area, filled with the sound of jazz and other chilled out music. In fact, as we were there during the rainy season, we spent a good deal of time doing just that.

The hostel is brand new and sparkling clean, with compact but very modern bathrooms and shower rooms. I miss the heated Toto toilet already! Jin makes everyone a great coffee in the mornings, and although there is no kitchen, there is hot water available for noodles or tea. A 7-11 is nearby for snacks, drinks and has an ATM machine that accepts foreign bank cards.

Time Peace Apartment only has dorm rooms separated into a women’s dorm (6 beds) and the mixed dorm (8 beds). There is also an attic loft-style room located above the women’s dorm that can sleep additional people, although I think it helps to be short as the ceiling looked pretty low. I spent a few nights in the women’s dorm before moving to the mixed dorm, and have to say I prefer the mixed dorm as it is a bit more spacious. It can be a little dim in the rooms, so pick a bed by the window for more natural light if you like (although be warned it gets light at around 4am in Hokkaido!).

All of the beds were incredibly comfortable, and unlike some places in Asia, were long enough for tall people like my husband and myself. Plenty of bedding is provided, along with a small towel for shower use. I believe you can rent a larger bath towel if you like, although I managed to get along just fine with the smaller towel. Lockers are provided for valuables. There is a washer and dryer available, although it may be faster just to hang up your clothes to dry rather than using the Japanese-style dryer (which does a great job of heating, but not actually drying, your clothes). As the hostel used to be a private residence, the Japanese-style stairs (narrow and small) can be a bit precarious in the dark or in socks, so take care!

The hostel is easy to get to from Sapporo station direct on one of the underground lines, and is within easy walking distance from the many bars and restaurants of the Susukino district. We had no problems walking all over the city, which is easy to navigate as it is on a grid system. Nakajima Park is just three blocks away, and is a really beautiful place for a stroll or a run. I actually enjoyed it more than the Botanic Gardens, and went jogging there every day that it wasn’t raining. There are detailed maps of Sapporo and the surrounding attractions in English available at the hostel. One computer is available in the lounge for public use, although wifi is free if you have your own laptop.

Jin really makes an effort to ensure everyone enjoys their time in Sapporo, with suggestions of where to go and eat. During our stay there, Jin arranged for guests to go the Sapporo Beer Festival together, watch the big July fireworks over the river together, and we had a mini-going away party in the lounge on our last night there which was great fun. If you are there in late July, Time Peace Apartment is a perfect choice as it is only a 5-minute walk from the river where the annual fireworks display is held, enabling you to see everyone dressed up in their traditional summer festival clothing (yukata, geta, and great hair!) without having to navigate the busy public transportation system that night.

Other highlights of Sapporo for us were Moerenuma Park, designed by the American sculptor Isamu Noguchi. Moerenuma Park can be reached via subway and then a bus – directions are set out on the free maps available at the hostel. We had fantastic ‘genghis khan’ (grilled lamb) meals at a place in Sapporo called Daruma – no Japanese language ability needed as they only serve one dish! Daruma was so good we went there twice. Also, if you have been in Japan for a while and are craving some food from ‘back home’, head to the gaijin bar called ‘TK7’ in the Tanuki Koji covered shopping arcade, which has really delicious fish tacos, burgers, and Australian meat pies. Oh, and lots of gaijin too.

We stayed in Sapporo before and after our trips to the northernmost islands of Hokkaido, so really had a chance to relax and rewind there. Sapporo may not have all the flash of Tokyo, but we really enjoyed the more leisurely pace and the friendly people who live there. We wound up staying at Time Peace Apartment for so long that Jin jokingly took to calling us ‘the residents’!

Time Peace Apartment is a great place to explore Sapporo and nearby cities, or just to rest and recharge.
