My stay at Jozankei turned out to be a pleasant surprise, and I wish I could stay for another night.
There were many hotel accommodations at Jozankei but we did not get our booking confirmed just a few days before the trip. We had two choices, either a high-end hotel, or Hanamomiji at Jozankeionsen Nishi Minamiku. Hanamomiji was known for its onsen and very Japanese style setting; the price was reasonable.
The hotel was well decorated; the room that my wife and I were staying was good for 4-5 people, and it was our first tatami sleeping experience, i.e. you slept on the floor with the traditional Japanese bedding. The service was courtesy and superb, the front-desk people explained to you very well about the hot spring facilities. There were a few private hot spring soaking rooms less than 2,000 Yen for an hour - all filled up fast, but the usual hot spring facilities were equally good.
Breakfast and dinner were included in the room price. Breakfast buffet was good quality and served with a variety of local and western favorites. What impressed the most was the dinner, each and every dish was a delicacy and nicely prepared (the sake went extremely well with the meal at a decent price). After dinner we took a short walk outside the hotel; there were many hotels in Jozankei but pretty spread out in a nice and quiet surrounding.
Onsen in Jozankei would definitely be your highlight of the trip. If you plan to take a trip to Hokkaido, you should include Jozankei - and book your hotel accommodation early. To get there is easy with free shuttle bus pick-up at the Sapporo Radio tower.
