Brand new 5 star hotel in Hangzhou's sleepy suburb of Xiaoshan. Sparkling new throughout, having opened only 3 months ago. You are greeted by a pair of majestic Rolls-Royce Phantom sedans guarding the front door like modern-day stone lions. The huge lobby features soft piano music, a grand staircase to the 2nd floor restaurant, and a pair of rare Honda motorcycles on display.
Rooms are stylish and very comfortable, with a unique step-down area for the work desk. Alas, you can't see the flat screen TV from the desk as it is recessed into the wall and blocked by the refrigerator/mini-bar. Wired and wireless Internet service is fast, reliable, and free of charge for now. English TV channels are limited to Discovery, BBC, and HBO, but they also have a video-on-demand service with hundreds of movie selections free of charge (possibly from pirated DVD's...)
The Grand Parkray has an excellent health club featuring a stylish indoor pool, sauna, and a decent fitness center. The fitness center is mostly open floor space and could add more equipment, but it also boasts a yoga room.
Dining is currently limited to a 1 Western and 1 Chinese restaurant on premises, although both are quite good. The hotel advertises a top-floor Italian restaurant but it was not yet open as of this writing. The room service food was bad according to a colleague. Unfortunately, the hotel is located in a business/industrial area and dining options nearby are extremely limited. There is no shopping available within walking distance. You will need to wave down a taxi to go anywhere interesting.
Since this is a new hotel, the staff are still trying to learn the ropes and attentive service is well-intentioned but awkward at times. For example, at the restaurants and health club, they will rush ahead to push the elevator buttons for you and then wait with you. Once the elevator arrives they will motion you into the elevator. Front desk staff generally struggled with English and had a hard time handling special requests. The laundry service will interrupt your business meeting with a phone call to tell you that they can't clean your shirt because they found a hole in it. With time and training I'm sure the kinks will be worked out in the customer service. The largely Chinese clientele smoke in the lobby and guest rooms, so rigorous cleaning and maintenance will be needed to keep the hotel from aging like its older contemporaries.
If you are staying in Xiaoshan for business the Grand Parkray is an excellent choice. It is newer and cleaner but otherwise comparable to the New Century Grand hotel down the road, although the New Century has the edge on service and location.
