If you're up for a lot of walking and need a chance to see anything 'green' then Xixi Wetlands is your answer. There's quite a bit of history too, however this area really could have been developed better than it is. March - April or end of Sept - Oct is the best time to go. Worth a day trip for a nice peaceful walk if you can get away from the many local tourists

We spent around ½ a day in the park. First we tried to walk, following the signs, but it was a little bit like maze and very hot in the middle of July :-)

We then decided to take a man powered rowing boat and it was a great investment and one of the most relaxing times I have had in China. The boat is a traditional Chinese rowing boat with a "skipper" in the back with one oar (think Venice :-) but without the singing). We spent around 2 hours on the boat and the cost was 200 RMB excluding tip. It is a little bit confusing when you pay for the boat; they will ask you for 400 RMB as a deposit; but if you just spend a reasonable time at the monastry in the middle of the trip you will get back 200 RMB after the monastery visit (just make sure to keep the card and receipt you got when paying for the boat).

The wetlands are beautiful and very relaxing and all in all it was a great ½ day.

We did not take the battery powered boat back to where we started, this is 60RMB per person and takes a "bigger less scenic route" if I got it right; instead we existed at Jiang Village, had lunch at a small noodle restaurant close to the Pagoda (西溪手工面馆). We then took the electric shuttle to the parking lot for 5 RMB and then the bus back to where we entered (the main ticket office and where the administration of the wetlands is situated). Just take any bus in the right direction :-).

Spent a pleasant afternoon here. Essentially a waterlogged area interspersed with quaint little villages. There are 3 entrances. We entered through the Zhoujiazhuang entrance, got the boat tickets and boated and walked around the park. Saw a number of colourful birds and an owl, lots of flowers, traversed through little villages - abandoned black and white former homes turned to shops and restaurants. Would recommend it.

Right at the west side of Hangzhou, Xixi wetland is a place for quick get away from the busy city life. The park has lots of water way and is nice for hiking around, or pay some cash to get a lazy boat ride (some one will paddle the boat for you. Cost 100 RMB per hour, may need to wait awhile inline before a boat is available in busy day). Suggested to avoid weekend or public holiday as the park will be overloaded with local (as anywhere in china). To avoid the crowds, take the boat or hike away from the popular path, the park is big enough to get really lost inside. There's also an old street style selling old folk product and foods, should try. If come by car, go to the north gate to find the parking.

Sounded interesting from website and reviews, but wouldn't spend limited time in Hangzhou to visit this. We were under-welmed. Scenery was nice, but not breath-taking. Not much recognizable wildlife.
