Private Tour: Hangzhou Tea Culture Day Tour

Think lots of greenery, Chinese style gardens and buildings, temples, teahouses.. and lots of tourists. We wandered in and thought about turning back as it felt too touristy but in the end enjoyed the walk anyway. Don't get too excited about the actual spring itself - it is a statue of a teapot with water running out of it. We had a good laugh and wandered out again. By the time we got here we had consumed enough tea for week, but it could have been a nice place to enjoy a cup or two. We preferred the less touristed areas but is was still ok for what it is.

Hupao Spring was the last stop on my trip to Hangzhou, and both my travelling companion and I were more than a little tired (she had a mild case of food poisoning, even) by the time we got off the bus at the entrance to the park. (There are several bus lines that go right to the park; following almost any of the busses that circle the West Lake will get you there.)

Although the day started muggy, the air cooled as we made our way up through the lush green woods. Hupao Spring is one of those parks in China where a lot of what were originally beautiful stone paths have been replaced with flat concrete steps that are much easier and safer to climb; a mixed blessing, but the park does have segments of the original stone if you climb higher.

There is water all over the park -- makes sense, as it is a spring, after all -- as well as lovely Tingzi to sit and contemplate life, nature, and poetry where scholar-philosophers did in the past. If you're not up to deep rumination, they're also convenient to rest your feet if you get tired! The climb is very easy overall, though, and the steps aren't on a steep incline at all. (There were plenty of older visitors climbing much faster than we students were!)

Most wonderfully for us, a light spring rain of the sort Hanzhou is famous for started as we reached a little past midway up the mountain. There is a souvenir area at this point where you can taste two of three "treasures of Hangzhou": Longjing tea brewed in Hupao spring water. We splurged on a 50-yuan cup of spring Longjing each; the water and tea combine for a very sweet, cleansing taste. There was none of the slight acidic/bitter taste that usually accompanies a first brewing of Longjing, just smooth sweet tea flavour the whole way through. The seats in the tea house are aligned along a window that opens on a narrow creek -- sipping our tea, listening to the rain strike the water, and looking at the scenery outside completely refreshed us at the end of our trip.

I absolutely recommend Hupao Spring as a necessary part of a visit to Hangzhou, to calm the soul and mind. Do try to visit when the weather forecast is for light rain. Not only is the view unbelievably beautiful, but there are fewer tourists!
