Zhejiang International Hotel
Ranked #44 of 2,497 Hotels in Hangzhou
Reviewed July 25, 2014

This hotel is well located, just off what seems to be a major Interstate in Hangzhou and within walking distance of shopping and a beautiful little canal. (3 blocks away is a silk market, with several blocks of well-prices silk clothing of all kinds. Don't miss this.) If you are going to Hangzhou specifically to visit beautiful West Lake, then find a closer hotel. This one is a little far from there. It wasn't the fanciest hotel I've visited in China, but the service was attentive and the place was clean with all the amenities one would need. This would be considered an excellent (but not luxury) hotel in the U.S. Enough of the staff spoke English that I never had a problem communicating a need. I had a room that faced the busy street. The view was great, but the traffic noise took some getting used to. There do seem to be rooms that face away from the street, so ask for those if you're sensitive to sound. There are only three non-smoking floors, and you have to ask specifically if you want a non-smoking room. I received a smoking room but didn't notice any smoking smells, so the filter must be decent. If you are in Hangzhou in the summer you will need air conditioning. It is legit HOT here. The a.c. in the hotel rooms worked well. On to food: The hotel restaurant is very good. The buffet, open breakfast, lunch and dinner, has a huge selection of food. From Chinese stir fry to dim sum to a noodle soup station to sushi to pancakes/eggs/bacon, there's a cuisine to fit your every mood. Tons of fruit and breads and juices. The bed in my room was just right: firm, with high-quality bedding. The room was a typical size, nothing too luxurious. It had a desk and a comfy chair for reading, besides the bed and a typical hotel bathroom. There was only one 110v plug in the room, so recharging all the devices took some juggling. Oh, and you ladies with hair, bring your own hair dryer. The one in the room resembled a 1950s vacuum cleaner and was way too weak to dry anything but short hair. The hotel has a beautiful pool, squash court, billiard room and a fitness center. Over all, this is a good quality hotel that I would recommend to anyone visiting Hangzhou. It's not as fancy as the new, over-the-top luxury hotels you sometimes encounter in China, but THOSE cavernous rooms with marble bathrooms can feel kind of soulless. Happy travels to Hangzhou. Don't miss the West Lake District while you're here!

Jane

I stayed in a standard room for 2 nights during a business trip to Hangzhou in April. The hotel locates at the CBD where have a lot of restaurants, shopping malls and convenience stores. Although the decoration is a bit old, all are clean and well maintained. Unfortunately, the room is not proof against sound. The cars on the flyover next to the hotel made noise all the time. I couldn’t sleep well at all.

The buffet breakfast was impressive and had great variety of choice.

As a non-smoker this hotel was my worst nightmare. A gentleman lit his cigarette during breakfast which was a buffet that lacked variety and what was there was pretty terrible.

The room had a comfortable bed but it had a smoky smell and wasn't as clean as I expect. There was mould on the roof and used toenail clippers!!

Wifi was only available in the lobby with the smokers and the staff were not helpful at all.

We did attempt to get a drink at the bar only to be told there was no cocktails or JD!!

I wouldn't come back.

Stayed here for a week on a business trip.

Room size is comfortable, lighting in room is adequate, well maintained, wifi is available in the room, personal fax service & for the rates we got it at, overall a good value for money.

Location is an advantage if you want to be in the central business district & close to the west lake but the expressway next to the hotel can be noisy at most times, so higher the floor you get, better for you. In any case there is no great view.

English speaking staff is a rarity which is surprising for a hotel that claims in its name as being a star international hotel, but I must add that staff does find ways to get over this in their own innovative ways.

Breakfast spread can get very boring if you stay for a longer time, nothing at all changes ; food quality could be better, bar could be more lively, overall the place can become a bit more zippy, it could be more " warm " to suit the Hangzhou culture. Stay with family could be pretty boring here.

Room Tip: Lower floors have high expressway noise

We arrived when subway is still under construction. Taxi would stop 300 yards away and you have to pass through uneven paving. However, inside the hotel is wonderful. The rooms are excellent. It is actually very convenient to west lake and many attractions.

I've stayed at this hotel numerous times and I can say with full confidence that it is clean, comfortable and pleasant. The hotel it not a part of any Western chain and has the look and feel of a grandiose, old fashioned, communist-era place for party functionaries. But contrary to what you would expect the service and facilities can compete with any chain hotel at this price point. The rooms in my experience are fully renovated and the rates are fair, which makes this a high value experience. The staff is helpful and responsive, although not everyone speaks English, which is no suprise given that you are in Hangzhou, not Beijing or Shanghai. Breakfast is relatively cheap and offers decent Chinese and Western food.
The location is great - in the heart of downtown Hangzhou, 2 k"m from West Lake and walking distance to the shopping districts.
The hotel's weak points are the gym, which is not at the level you'd find at a mid-range Western chain. The pool too - I've never used it but it did not seem too appealing to me. Another problem is that the hotel is situated right next to one of the city's main highways. This makes some rooms quite noisy, but not unbearable in my opinion.
Overall, keeping in mind that you are in Hangzhou and not in cosmopolitan Beijing or Shanghai, and given the room rates - a stay at this hotel is a positive experience from every important aspect.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms that are higher up and do not face the highway, which is right next to the hotel build...
