Having dined at the buffet restaurant at the Dragon and noting it's very plush decor, I decided that I stayed at an executive suite at the Dragon in Hangzhou for one night with my girlfriend. The experience was far from pleasant:

Poor Quality Bedding
First and probably the most important aspect of any hotel is the sleep quality: the bed linens were made out of some kind of synthetic material that produced an irritating sensation on our skin. We ended up getting only 2 to 3 hours of sleep because of the discomfort. Be aware that the tags on the bedding says "100% Cotton", but are certainly not.

Dangerous Furniture:
The sliding door of the wardrobe nearly became a guillotine that sliced several fingers clean-off if it weren't for my quick observation. The steel fittings on the sliding door is very dangerously designed with a sharp edge that can act like a blade when sliding the doors. It is unfortunate that I do not have a photo of this dangerous contraption.

Unhelpful and Unfriendly Staff:
A local friend came to the hotel to have lunch with me the following day. Being a student at a nearby university, he rode his bicycle to the hotel. At the hotel's grand entrance, he was not allowed to park his bicycle and was told to move it to the basement facility. In a rush to meet for lunch and move on to other business, I asked the hotel door staff to walk my friend to the underground parking or possibly assist by taking his bicycle there. The apparent head dude (the eldest looking) shrugged off the "unworthy" request.

Avoid staying this hotel at all costs, though the buffet at the Cafe is worth a try with some imported cheeses and seafood.

Stayed here over New Year's Day and it is a nice hotel. Rooms were small but bathroom was good size with both shower stall and tub. One of the few Chinese hotels I ever stayed at with Western amenities such as Colgate toothpaste instead of some random Chinese brand with antifreeze. Italian restaurant had a good set lunch for 98 RMB including soup or salad, main dish, cake and coffee. Big buffet restaurant with some sad looking Western fare but great seafood. Also a deli with limited sandwich selection.

TV had some 40 channels including several Western one like CNN, Bloomberg, HBO, etc. (more than when I stayed at a Hilton recently in the US). Free WiFi, which beats most 5 star hotels (subject to the Great Fire Wall of China unless you have a VPN of course).

Re the earlier smoking comment, all I can say is welcome to China. If you don't like smoking, don't come to China. Class A office building bathrooms typically have a thick haze of smoke. People smoke everywhere. Almost everyone smokes. Reminds me of the 90s in the US before smoking was banned everywhere.

Can't really comment on location since I was staying here to visit some relatives and not business or tourism. Taxis are cheap and plentiful though (except when you really need them) so easy to get anywhere quickly and cheaply.

I liked this hotel very much: friendly staff, comfortable rooms incl. amenities with a good quality, excellent buffet breakfast, good restaurant for the dinner, location not far from the beautiful lake and shopping area.

My experience at this hotel was absolutely awful. When I tried to check in, my reservation was lost and they were sold out. I had called TWICE to confirm, but when it is midnight in a strange city, you don't argue. they managed to find me a room in a hotel around the corner, which was a total dump. If this is where they send guests for overflow on a regular basis, they have a real problem.

The front desk staff has a very limited grasp of the english language and gave me bad advice on every turn. Smoking is rampant in this hotel and even a non-smoking room reeked of nicotine. I gave up after one night and transferred to another hotel.

Nobody seemed that interested in helping guests, and were more concerned with whatever tours and groups came in. Getting a bellhop to help get a cab was also a challenge, something I found much easier at the hotel I transferred to.

The rooms were outdated, and the location was in a very marginal area of town. It is cheap, and for good reason. I would highly recommend looking into another hotel like the Sofitel or Hyatt if you consider traveling to Hangzhou. The rooms are only slightly more and well worth the extra price.

I really couldn't say anything redeeming about this hotel.

This hotel is in a good location and our rooms had a view over the tree covered hillside opposite. The rooms were comfortable and clean but not luxurious. The restaurant was well located on the ground floor and served a generous breakfast variety.
The business centre was good.
