Owner description: Considered one of the most beautiful sights in Hangzhou, this scenic lake is sheltered on three sides by hills, with open flat land to the northeast where downtown Hangzhou is located.

I just love the West Lake. It's one of these few places in China where you can feel the legends associated to it. It is a must see in Hangzhou and therefore can get crowded on weekend. You can walk around it, visit the pagoda, take a boat ride... it has just so much to offer. In 5 years in China, I've been to the West lake 5/6 times and I always take the time to have a seat and wait for that fabulous sunset. It can be such a restful place where you can just sit and enjoy a good book. Love it.

Truly amazing. Beautiful and well maintained soft and hard scapes. A location fully of cultural events. You could easily loose yourself here for a couple of days. Yes it can get crowded, but if you chose your time and locations right you can avoid the overbearing crowd. To really appreciate the cultural depth of this place the discerning travel is well advised to do a little prior reading.

I visited the West Lake for the first time. I first rented a bike to check out the periphery of the lake. But, it got too crowded. Bike rental stations are everywhere in Hangzhou. You can rent one and drop it off at any station to sight see on foot, and then pick up a new one.

You will need to leave a deposit of 300 yuan ($50) which you'll get back after returning the bike. Bike rental is free for the first hour and 3 yuan (50 cents) for every hour thereafter. You'll get a card to lock and unlock the bikes by swiping it on the lock system.

I hopped on a boat for 55 yuan ($10) and headed to the island of the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon. It was a rainy and misty day. Although I couldn't clearly see the mountains and pagodas from a distance, the scenery was simply mystical as if the Lady of the Lake from Arthurian legends would suddenly appear before me.

This is what we're all here for, and it doesn't disappoint. We went on a weekend, which meant the place was teeming with tourists and locals. Didn't matter though, there was plenty of space for everyone. We rented bicycles (really cheap, about U$7 per hour, with 1 hour thrown in free) and cycled along the path that cuts across the lake, as well as the one that circumnavigates it. A wonderfully relaxing experience, and the authorities even made efforts to prohibit cars and motorbikes (incl. electric bicycles) from using the bicycle path. Plenty of good food around the area too, so we had both lunch and dinner there. We found a nice cafe (Homestead Coffee) where we cooled off after a long day of walking and cycling -highly recommended way to spend a leisurely day in Hangzhou.

This is a very special place and a must see when in the area! Very well organized . The walk is good ,the boat tour ok, the bonsai gardens are special. The evening show amazing. I was impressed by the good mood of the young visitors. It is always a good sign when even the young folks, the future of China is enjoying the design and history of the past,
