“Romantic and Spiritual and Lovely”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2013

Poets and tea masters have been coming here for 100's of years. The lake is surrounded witth temples, all of which are amazing. My favorite is the temple of 1000 buddhas. Buddhas carved into the mountain and cave walls. Such a beautiful site. The lake itself, with it's serene walking bridge, is beautiful all year long. Have tea in a proper tea house. If you are into experiencing China, go here. Do not miss Hangzhou. My second favorite site I have seen in China so far.

“Try to go on a nice day”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2013

Had some time while we were in Shanghai, which can easily be seen in 3 days, so I went to the West Lake in Hangzhou. Took the bullet train, made the trip very quick. Easy bus ride, K7, from the train station. You can get off in multiple places and since I was going to be there for awhile it did not matter to me. Excellent day, meant a lot of pleasant walking or you can rent a bike. Great place to visit, very peaceful, go early if you want to avoid some of the crowds.

“pleasantly surprised”

I last visited here 20 years ago. The locals have significantly improved, updated and kept the area very clean. You can rent bicycles fora few Yuan and tour the whole area...very interesting and worthwhile.

“Lovely, but crowded”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 27, 2013

Having lived in Hangzhou for a year, we have visited West Lake numerous times. It is a very nice part of an otherwise uninspiring Chinese city. It is the lung of the town and is one of the best places to see some greenery. At times it can be serene and peaceful, but if you want to go to the famous scenic spots you will see a different side. The main tourist sites are massively crowded and far from restful. Cars bully their way through tour groups and generally make the atmosphere tense, rather than tranquil. The Chinese have a phrase: human sea, human mountain. If you are on one of the causeways, you will become acquainted with the meaning of this saying.

It can be lovely, it can be frustrating, but it is definitely worth visiting if you are in Hangzhou.
