“OK hotel, great location”
Reviewed July 2, 2012

The hotel is just another one of those standard business hotel, nothing fancy but at the same time not bad. The rooms are nice and comfortable, they do not stand out for any reason, good or bad. The breakfast room is good and there is plenty of choice which I quiet enjoyed. I stayed here for one night only and it was just nice. The location is a little out of the city but at the same time perfect for exploring the lake and the park across the road...the lake is just magical.

Hotel dining in the night is OK, we tried the Japanese restaurant and found the food ok but expensive, just like the rest of the things in the hotel. Value for money is still Ok but not as good as other hotels I have stayed at.

The check in and check out was smooth and easy.

The rooms are a bit tired and dated, however they have started to renovate and at the time of writing this we were subjected to a daily barrage of drilling, hammering and knocking, which unfortunately started at around 9pm including Saturday and Sunday. We did complain at around 8.15 on the Sunday morning, which was after a night on the town, and they did offer to move us, which we declined because it was our last night and did not want to start packing at this time in the morning, so they gave us a bowl of fruit. Ha ha
The staff are always very helpful and
friendly and I do realise that renovations need doing, so have not penalized them on here for that.

The Zhejiang Narada Grand Hotel is huge, but that adjective gets much over-worked when talking about Chinese hotels. If you were hoping for a quick trot across the road to West Lake, or even a glimpse from the windows, forget it. There is hill in front of the hotel and the hotel, tall as it is, is just not tall enough to see over it. West Lake is a brisk 20 minutes walk or five minutes in a taxi, but, however you get there, the Lake is a truly magnificent location whatever the weather or time of day.

As for the hotel, in truth it shows a little sign of age and is unashamedly a hotel for tourists. The reception area is enormous and there are bars and shops and supplies of many of the things that you might have forgotten. The corridors and room decorations are Chinese art-deco, somewhat tired, but well cleaned and maintained. Beds were hard. The display of breakfast food went on for ever and the quality and range of food excellent. I defy anyone to be dissatisfied. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable.

Unfortunately, the hotel is undergoing refurbishment, not mentioned at the time of booking, and hammering and drilling start on the dot of 9.00 and continue to 6.00. The reception staff thought I would – should be out during that time and were perplexed when I seemed unhappy about the intrusion. We moved room but it did not help much. The banging goes on for the next four months – at least. And, my major gripe about 5-star Chinese hotels – why charge guests silly prices for slow and unreliable Internet access.

This hotel is actually called the Zhejiang Narada Grand Hotel. It is part of the World Trade Centre site in Hangzhou.
It is near to the Hangzhou stadium, and 10 minutes walk from the old Hangzhou University campus of what is now Zhejiang Univesity. Across the road you can walk up the hill to great views of the West Lake. This is a good stiff and in places steep walk that will take you about 35 minutes, but it is through a "natural landscape" of bamboo and woods. Just ask the hotel exactly how start on the path.
The gym is good and well worth using. Easy to spend an hour there pummelling your body.
They do a great buffet in the evening, if you like to sample different styles of food.
Staff are professional. With room costs under £100 this hotel is good value for money.
Overall a good business hotel in Hangzhou.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the rear of the hotel to avoid the noise of the main road.

Old style hotel with bathtub and a lot of wood, that looked dirty, but was not dirty.
TV program with all the usual channels, incl CNN, DW, HBO, Cinemax and I think also BBC and Discovery.
Internet was free of charge, but very slow, even skype calls were not great, which usually work even over very slow lines. iChat, Facetime and VPN worked, but very, very slowly, so not really useable.
Breakfast was good, with all the usual stuff.
Beds were extremely hard, my back is still hurting.

Electric plugs are not easily to be found and only allow for Chinese plugs and small European ones.

The really annoying thing was the electric controls. No way when it is dark to find the right button.
I probably would not stay there again, but if you have to - do not worry, you will survive.

Great place stay while in Hangzhou. Although it's not near the Lake or the tourist areas (no Pizza Hut here LOL), it does have a great restaurant, is within walking distance to bars and other restaurants.

The front desk staff is very helpful. This is were I exchange my US dollars for RMB's. It's a very fair exchange rate and they will swap them back for me at the end of my visit.

I have stayed at this hotel many times, mainly for its location and lack of surprises. You get what you expect from a business hotel. Nothing special, but nothing too bad either. The taxi drivers certainly know where to find it.
