Hangzhou Shangri-La's friendly staff made my stay at this first 5 star hotel in Hangzhou an enjoyable one. I will recommend family and friends to stay here and i will come back, just for the excellent service there. the food was okay compare to other hotels.

great location, can't image better. the hotel is a bit tired but very clean and pleasant. value was great using the holiday in promotion-free bfest + 300 CNY F&B credit. Requested crib + extra bed for kids at no additional cost.

Room Tip: Room 511 in the east wing is great for families.

My husband is a member of the Shangri-la Golden Circle and had booked two rooms in the hotel for our recent stay (June 16 to 18). I was a bit wary having read some of the less flattering reviews of the property, but I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised by the hotel and very happy with our entire experience.

The hotel has been around for a long time (I have friends who stayed there 20 years ago when it was the only hotel in Hangzhou with heating in winter!), especially the older West Wing which is the original Hang Zhou Hotel building. We stayed at the "newer" East Wing and had access to the Club floor on the 6th floor which provided complimentary breakfast (from 6 am to 10 am) and drinks/canapes (from 5pm to 7.30pm). The selection of food is not as huge as the buffet in the main lobby, but was more than adequate to fill us up. It's a combination of local and western food, the chef will whip up eggs the way you like it, and pancakes too at breakfast. The Club Room had lovely views of the lake and the city in the distance. We were taken directly to the Club Room to check-in, and the very attentive staff there handled our bookings and enquiries very efficiently. The decor of the hotel is rather dated and grandiose (circa 1970s), but everything was spotlessly clean albeit soul-less. In the early morning, there is a gentleman who "roasts" the famous Dragon Well tea leaves by hand near the main lobby at the West Wing, which heavenly fragrance fills all the long corridors. There is also an ATM located in the hotel which is handy. The rooms we had on the 7th floor were good sized and very clean, with high ceilings and windows. The beds were very comfortable and the carpet and furnishings looked new. The bathroom is "old-fashioned" in that it has only one long bath, sink and WC all in one room, but L'Occitane toiletries were provided, and hot water was instantaneous. We travelled with two boys (aged 9 and 5) and the housekeeping staff came and delivered extra toiletries and even provided two sets of child-sized bed room slippers which really impressed me!

The hotel is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from the old Hang Zhou train station (we took the express train from Shanghai). We arranged for a hotel pick up of 6 of us, 4 adults and 2 kids and 5 suitcases for 350RMB. Well worth the price when we saw the long queues for taxis at the train station. Apparently there is a great shortage of taxis in Hang Zhou.

The location of the hotel is fantastic. It is away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre (typical modern city) and located at the foot of a hill and next to the West Lake. The sun was up by 5.30 am and I enjoyed peaceful walks at 6 am around the lake. The lotus flowers were just beginning to bloom and the locals were up and exercising. Easy and quick access to both Solitary Hill Island (孤山) (very scenic) and Su Causeway. My personal favourite was circumventing the area of the lake where "Impressions West Lake" is performed - called "Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard" (曲院风荷). General Yue Fei's tomb and temple is literally 10 minute walk along the main road from the hotel (it opens from 7 am!!). And a pedestrian underpass with escalators in front of the temple takes one across to the area of the lake where you watch Zhang Yimou's "Impressions West Lake" show at night (costly at 250RMB for the cheapest seats, but a must see if you're here). There are many fast food shops (international and local) and souvenir shops around here, if you're so inclined.

We took a taxi to HeFang Street, the so-called traditional street.About a 10 minute ride. Very touristy. Good for souvenirs. Like traditional chinese dress for children, silks and teas.

We're told the best time to to visit Hang Zhou is in Spring (April) for the sakura and Autumn for the fall foliage. June is best to see the lotus flowers.

Room Tip: Garden view rooms were quieter as they faced away from the main road, but no view of the lake.

Great location! It's located right in front of the west lake where you can stroll to see local attractions and shops. The breakfast garden area is enjoyable with super delicious menu. A class service, as in any Shangri La! There are few bars inside the hotel which open until very late for a nightcap. Perfect experience! Always stay here whenever I visit the city.

Despite being an old Shangri-la property in Hangzhou, the hotel management has done all the best they could to provide reasonably comfortable living environment to their guests. The hotel positions at the upper slope of the West Lake with an excellent view and nice country look environment. The soft-ware in terms of hotel service circumvents the shortcomings of the hardware of the hotel property of more than 70 years old.

This hotel was perfect for us. It is on the north side of the lake that is much more quiet than the east side (city), south side (major attractions), and the west side (big road). DO NOT stay in a hotel like the Hyatt near the city, the north side where this hotel is located is much quieter. The room is also nice, with plenty of room and comfortable beds. The rooms were top-notch even though when you have good location you really don't need a too good room. The breakfast was expensive but worth it. Overall, great hotel!

Room Tip: Ask the receptionist for an upgrade. Garden rooms are the best value

No getting away this is a great hotel in a very good location if you are a tourist but it's far too pricey.

Rooms are quite large but they seriously need a make over.

Breakfast is bog standard and nothing to shout about.

On the lake so plenty of interesting tourist eating places to try out but beware, no English in these at all.

The lake gets very crowded at weekends and is a major attraction for the locals. We have something called the Lake District and the same tourist things here as there.

Overall, a bit pricey for what you are getting.
