The restaurant is voted 33 out of 50 in Asia by some UK magazine and although they have an extensive menu, we can't see what the fuss is all about. Perhaps it is a good choice in Hangzhou for the local favourite, Beggar's chicken (do pre-order as they only make a limited few a day) and dong po rou (as pictured) is very tasty. But apart from that, the food is rather bland and unadventurous. The dessert menu is limited but otherwise, well done. Soups are a hit and miss. Try it, but don't fret if you don't get a chance. Reasonable prices (compared to Shanghai). And the wine buffet is a nice attraction.

Very good food, great service, however, a it is little expensive. Many staff speak English and are always willing to help.

It's hard to see what the fuss is about. The setting is more comfortable than most restaurants, but the food is mostly pretty average - and the service is just AWFUL.

The level of English spoken by most of the servers seemed to be very low (we would have been happier speaking to them in Chinese, but as we were a group of foreigners they insisted on trying to use English), and we got stuck with a particularly overbearing supervisor who wouldn't answer any of our questions about the menu, insisted on trying to order for us, and then repeatedly criticised our choices ("That's too many vegetable dishes." "You should try this instead." Very, very tiresome.). And they were 'out' of Beggar's Chicken - supposedly one of the restaurant's signature dishes! It was such a colossally bad opening impression that I very nearly walked out before we managed to finish ordering.

After bringing the main courses, the staff all went into hiding. We waited a full hour for them to bring the dessert menu, and eventually had to go in search of it ourselves. Desserts then took a long time to come; but staff did not think to clear the table of our main dishes until after the desserts were ready to be served and there was nowhere to put them.

The menu is unhelpful - very little information about the dishes in Chinese or English, and very hard to read in the subdued light of the dining room.

Some of my companions spoke well of the desserts, but my cheesecake was stodgy and bland. And that was the keynote of most of the food: it was nicely presented, but had very little flavour.

I think people are going here for the ambience and the reputation, not the food. It's not even the best restaurant on West Lake, let alone in the whole of Hangzhou or the whole of China.

Was recommended this restaurant by the staff in the club lounge, saying it is one of top 50 Chinese restaurant in the world. Am glad hubby and I tried - we tasted the most sophisticated and refined fusion Hangzhou style cuisine with quality comparable to the Michelin star restaurants we went to in Europe, HK and Singapore! Ambience is modern interpretation of Ancient Chinese tea house.
What we tried :
Signature pyramid style Braised Pork Belly ( with fresh and preserved vegetables and flat buns )
Sweet Vinegared Westlake fish ( using sea fish instead for a smoother texture and finish )
Vegetable stems diced and cooked with mushrooms and black fungus)
Jasmine flower tiramisu and white sesame ice cream
Mango sago

Spent about USD80 per person for lunch. The prices are very high for Hangzhou but for the quality , it's worth it.
