Hofang Youth Hostel
Reviewed June 18, 2012

We had a great stay in this hostel until we ate breakfast there on our last morning. Husband asked for fried eggs, sunny side up, but when they arrived they were not quite cooked so he asked for them to be cooked a bit more ... when he got them back they had been turned to rubber in the microwave. He was not impressed.

Apart from that experience was all good. The hostel is in one of the quieter streets in the pedestrian area - close to 'gourmet street' where there are lots of restaurants to choose from. There was a street food market past the drum tower and a nice little coffee shop across the road.

We stayed in a private (loft style) room which was very clean and the bathroom was impeccable - it looked like it had been recently renovated. The room has hand towels when you arrive but you can get bigger towels if you ask at reception. You can also get free drinking water at reception.

We also tried the Hangzhou bicycle scheme and it was great (very convenient and cheap). Some of the bikes are a bit rattly but if you get a dodgy one you can just swap it for another.

Room Tip: The private loft style room has a mattress on the upstairs floor.

We were there 3 nights in May 2012. Really good place, close to pedestrian zone, but quiet side street, taxi can not enter, but stops about 5 minutes walk near city gate / drum tower. Bicycles system of Hangzhou is perfect - just buy (deposit in fact) the card and use any bicycle anywhere you will see red stand. One of the returning point for the card is at the end of pedestrian zone, at Wushan square.
Lot of restaurants in Gaoyin street (next to pedestrian zone to the north), also one nice tea shop, cheaper than in pedestrian zone.
Staff was very friendly, but we get more information from tourist information office in Yanan road.

Loved just about everything about Hofang. Price was reasonable, beds comfy, showers warm, ambience lovely. They have two of the sweetest cats ever. Food was pretty solid, and the coffeeshop next door was exceptional... "Best Coffee in Hangzhou"... you'll know the one.

Only downsides are no breakfast included, and there's no soap or shampoo included, and the towels are just hand towels. Everything is for sale at the front desk, so not really a big deal.

Also, you get a 20% discount at their restaurant next door. Not a bad deal.

I stayed here for 2 nights. I booked private room and my room was good with clean bathroom. The hostel is lovely with small garden and the location is perfect. You can enjoy eating and shopping nearby. The staff were helpful but someone should more smile, I'd say. Thank you.

This hostel is near Gao Yin Street and many, a whole street I should say, great restaurants are within short walking distance, 10 minutes of walking maximum. One of the most famous restaurant, Wang Run Xing, as well as McDonalds are just a mere 3 minutes away! You will never get hungry staying here!

However, since it's It is located in a walking street, no car/taxi can come in. The nearest stop (for bus especially) is Gulou, and it will take about 5 to 10 minutes walk to get there. We want to go to westlake area and lingyin temple, so we need to walk about 15 to 20 minutes to get a right bus. It's a bit tiring especially when we've walked so much during the day. Oh well, if you are planning to take taxi all the time, this wouldnt be a big problem. But bus will only cost you as little as 2RMB to go literally everywhere!

Other issues are:
1) Noisy. Our 3-bedded room has two windows, one of it is facing the street. It could get pretty noisy, in the morning in particular.

2) Bathroom. The floor got flooded and it could never dry up. It's the bad construction I suppose. Not only that it is an extremely cold and windy inside (there's a huge window in the bathroom! And it's In winter!), the hot water supply was also inconsistent. I could be washing my hair half way and all it came out was icy cold water. Such a terrible experience. The tap water takes some time to warm up, but still quite cold. They explained that their hot water supply is under maintanance.

3) Room. It's a bit chilly for winter days, the AC takes some time, hours, to warm the room, that was with bathroom door shut, otherwise the hot air just got eaten up by the wind from outside.

Despite the bathroom issue (I hope they fix it soon), it's quite a pleasant stay. Though the room is a bit small, I like that it is clean (it's rather new) with many restaurants and shopping nearby as well as friendly staffs too. I dare to say that these bunch of people are some of the most friendliest staffs in so many places I have been to in China. They made me feel welcomed. Keep up the good work, guys.

Room Tip: Lesser window is warmer, less windy.

It is a very nice old Chinese style building in the very center of the old town. Lots of shopping and eating options around the hostel. Rooms are clean but a little small. AC works but it takes time to warm the room in cold cold winter days. I found the water a bit cold to wash in the mornings, again it may the cold winter. Staff was friendly and helpful. I had good time and definetly would like to go back if I ever visit Hangzhou again.

Room Tip: You ll see an information "Tatami bed" which doesnt mean its a kind of Japanese bed, it me...
