“I had to double-check if it is the same hotel!!”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

I am a seasoned traveller and very often rely on Tripadvisor for my hotel choices around the world. I am sorry to say this hotel is far from all the rave reviews in this forum that I had to double check if I stayed in the same hotel as the reviews.

I paid good money and booked into a "lake view" room on the sixth floor. It is a very very far lake view and obstructed by trees and the other parts of the hotel. (the hotel is horseshoe shape) Upon asking the front desk, they explained that if they move us closer to the lake (which is not much closer), we will be right next to the main road and will be noisy. In real fact, the whole building is a block or 2 off the lake so it is a real stretch to say it is lake view. There are quite a few international hotels that has real lake views.

The hotel is more like a group tour hotel. The lobby is dark and looks more like one of the wanna-be 5-star hotels in China. Our room setting was adequate but did not feel very clean. For example, there was black molding on the bathroom walls between tiles etc. They do have a comfortable bed though. Also, the staff at the lobby addressed and smile at the guests so they do try.

On the service side, we took have a bottle of Evian water from the fridge only to find that it was opened before. We told the front desk who did not register our complaint until I said to her explicitly that this was a complaint and she'd better tell her supervisor. To give the hotel credit, the assistant housekeeping manager came and apologize instead of trying to give excuses.

All in all, the hotel is at best average. We did not eat at the hotel so I cannot comment. At the price we paid, we's probably stay somewhere else next time we visit Hangzhou.

I stayed here 3 nights in July, 2013. The service was excellent as was the friendliness of the staff. The breakfast is top notch and one of the best that I have had in China. The hotel is just a few steps from West Lake which is a marvelous park with many walking trails, sights to see, and museums ( all free ). The only complaint I had was that my bill in yuan was converted into US Dollars at check out with a service fee and a very poor exchange rate despite the fact that I wanted to pay in yuan and have my credit card handle the conversion transaction. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose the lake side which is quieter. However, even on the 5th floor you have a very poor view of t...

The staff made the 5 nights I stayed here very welcoming. They are without exception, fantastic. The location is excellent, close to West Lake, and the main shopping streets nearby. The Metro (Underground) is also nearby and costs approx. 20p per station. The breakfast is very good with plentiful Western and Chinese options. The room was great with a bed that I just about needed a step ladder to get on to - so comfy. TV has many channels including quite a few foreign language station (about 4 in English). The bathroom had a powerful shower and a bath, with plenty of space. There was also a small balcony. The staff kept telling me about their Thai restaurant, but I didn't get to try it unfortunately.
