Hangzhou International Youth Hostel

Boasting an unbeatable location on the edge of the famed Xihu Lake and situated in a neighborhood with great cafes and galleries, accommodation at the hostel comes at a steal. We stayed in a double room, a charming space with a sloped ceiling, skylight and cheery yellow-painted walls. We also had a private bathroom, which was well-appointed as far as Chinese toilets go. In our opinion, a private room at the hostel probably offers better value and quality than most rooms at mid-range hotels across the country. The room also came with breakfast vouchers at the hostel's cafe, a well-run coffee joint on the ground level. Service at the front desk though, was a tad slow and could've been better.

Room Tip: Go for a room on the top level, which affords great views of the nearby temple and lake.

The hostel is in a cool part of town, near a lot of art galleries, one of the best art schools in China, and right on the West Lake. The hostel itself was relatively clean (stayed there in June 2012) and the people pretty friendly, in the hostel. The restaurant attached was so so, but the staff was not friendly, or should I say accommodating. Each time I asked for something they didn't want to do, the excuse was, the boss said not to do that. Once I wanted to exchange toast for french fries on a sandwich plate, the waitress kept saying no way, and when I asked her to just ask the chef, lo and behold, he came out and asked what the fuss was, and agreed right away to my request. Next day, asked for a piece of bread or a bun to go with some soup, was denied. Boss' rules again.

One more thing about this hostel, to get in to the door for reception, and building 2, you have to walk through a garbage strewn alley, it is the back end of the kitchen, and where all the waste is stored, so the ground is sticky and on a hot day, rather smelly. I walked all the around to another door for reception area just to avoid this, but to get in to building 2 there is no other way, you have to plug your nose and run the gauntlet. Nasty.

So, I like the place, and it was ok, but the restaurant staff and the garbage smell left me with mixed feelings.

Room Tip: ask not to be in building 2, see if you can avoid the garbage alley...

This was my first experience in a hostel and in China. I always had a misconception that hostels were dirty and crammed, however this hostel was a pleasant surprise! It was very simple, clean and had a unique charm. There were several separate rooms and restrooms for your own, so no communal sharing, unless you booked for one. Located near plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants and the beautiful West Lake all within walking distance. And like everything in China it was a bargain!

One tip on food, you may explore miles around the lake looking for a good cafe/ restaurant, but surprisingly when we came back the cafe right downstairs in the hostel happen to have some of the best food i ate in Hangzhou.

Heading down to Hangzhou for 2 nights from Shanghai, we were recommended to stay at Mingtown Hostel and were very happy with our stay in the end. We payed 55 RMB per night for a 4-bed dorm room with A/C, lockers and the most comfortable beds ever (literally). There was a shared bathroom, which was clean yet the hot water only worked in the morning and at night and was only warm. The hostel has wifi in the foyer (not in the room) and a communal kitchen with a fridge, microwave and stove (that we made extensive use of), however unfortunately they did not supply butter, oil or virtually any cooking utensils except a fry pan and wok.

The location is perfect for a first time traveler to Hangzhou being 10 seconds walk from West Lake, a 5 minute bike ride to the supermarket and just off the main road so it isn't noisy at night. There is also conveniently a nice cafe next door that provide decent food and drink but is a bit pricey with meals starting at 30 RMB. Besides the average showers, terrible wifi connection that didn't reach the room and the horn players that decided to practice scales outside our window each morning - Mingtown hostel was a very nice stay and we would definitely head back there if returning to Hangzhou. Thanks!

Room Tip: Try get a room in building 1, as you'll most likely avoid the trumpet players in the morning and...

The location is the only good thing about it. The staff is quite rude and not helpful and have a very poor english. I stayed in a dorm of 6 beds but they had an extra bed in the middle of the room. It was dirty, hot and full of mosquitos. I wouldn't go back there. I have stayed in very nice hostels in China this is why I was surprised with this one. The wifi was working very slow. There was a bar-restaurant next to the hostel which was cosy and had western food but very expensive.

Our main purpose to go to HangZhou is to enjoy the great view and ambience of the West Lake, and this hostel location met our very purpose. It is just less than 1 minute walk away from the West Lake. Xihu Tiandi (西湖天地), The West Lake Museum, HeFangJie Walking Street (河坊街), Orioles Singing in the Willows (柳浪闻莺), LeiFeng Pagoda(雷峰塔), HuBin Garden(湖滨公园) are all within walking distance.

The hostel is rather old, but clean enough. The standard rooms that we stayed are quite well decorated, very old fashion JiangNan style. The stall that we met are very helpful.

The cafe linked to the hostel is cool. We had a very decent breakfast there. Just next door of this YHA is a steamboat restaurant (澳门豆捞) which we enjoyed a lot. Another restaurant that we love is The Grandma's (Hubin Road), which is about 1km away from this Youth Hostel.
