“Interesting place to visit in Kunming”
Reviewed February 15, 2014

This is an old water reservoir from 17th century that now is becoming a tourism spot. The lakes and the parks surrounding the lakes is very maintained and quite clean despite of the numerous visitors.

Located very close to the downtown of Kunming, this park is like a cultural center where you can see small groups of elderly people playing traditional music, practicing Chinese yoga, practicing kungfu movements and even dancing.

The best time to visit this park is during the winter (Jan - Mar) when thousands of Siberian Seagulls visit this park after a long migration journey from Siberia to avoid the bitter winter. You can buy some birds feed from the food stall to add more fun from bird feeding activities.

Reviewed February 8, 2014

This area of Kunming is brimming with activity and so therefore really interesting to see. Music, dancing, boats, millions of seagulls, just an wonderful place to be and see the local population enjoying this outdoor space in Kunming, highly recommended have to see and experience.

“Peaceful park in the middle of Kunming”
Reviewed January 29, 2014

This park is really enjoyable if you are running away from big cities like Shanghai or Beijing. Even if it is crowded, it is full of nice structure and building and is pretty big so that you don't feel suffocating. It is even close to the Yuantong temple, so even if you stop by Kunming for a short period, you can just walk by, take some pictures and go on to see the temple.

“It was nice enough”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

The lake was nice but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it. It has the typical stalls selling food and trinkets.

“Long Layover in Kunming - go to Green Lake”
Reviewed January 9, 2014

I found clear information about Kunming hard to find online, esp. related to what to do for long layovers that include an overnight stay.

Here is what to do:

Get a hotel right around Green Lake. It's a good twenty minutes from the airport, but I didn't find great reviews of any hotels right near the airport. The taxi ride was worth the time and the 75 yuan.

You can get a cab from one of the hecklers inside the airport, or walk outside and get in the taxi line, where you'll get a certified taxi who charges using "fapia" (metered fare). Make sure to have the name or address of your hotel written in Chinese. If booking on Agoda.com, the confirmation email includes the name / address in Chinese – you just need to look carefully partway down the email.

Walk around the paths of Green Lake, which is safe even at night, quaint, and less hectic than what you'll find in other parts of the city. Get local food or go to "foreigners street", where you'll find food of all types. I was ready for non-local fare, and had a decent pizza, vegetable soup, and lasse at French Cafe.

I stayed at Grand Park Hotel, just a stone's throw from Green Lake. There was a special on rooms for $90, which included breakfast. This was supposedly marked down from $250, which while the hotel was nice, would have been too much to pay. There are plenty of other places to stay around here, but I needed guaranteed internet for work, and the Grand seemed like it would do the job.

I gave this rating an "excellent" only because it's what I'd recommend for overnight layovers in Kunming if your stay is long enough to take in a dinner or breakfast and a bit of strolling around. If you're only looking to sleep and catch a flight the next morning, might as well figure out one of the hotels within a couple km of the airport.

On another Kunming layover, I stayed at a hotel where I can't remember the name, but the name was a number. The airline put us up there because of a missed flight. It was a rough and tumble, kind of dirty place, but good enough if you can get it for a reasonable price (don't pay more than $50).
