“Random location”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

kinda in random location, there's not much immediately around it, and the closest decent convenience store is a five minute walk down a lonely stretch of road. the layout of the hostel is also random. there are many levels spread over a steep hillside, it seems.

ordered food with a big group and they messed up part of the order. one guy wanted to know what kind of burger meat he got -- beef, chicken or otherwise... he was told it was "upland." nice.

i stayed in the female dorm that accommodated six girls, one of which looked like she LIVED there based on the amount of stuff she had in the room and the monopoly she had on the storage space in the room.

common bathrooms were not that clean and the floors in and around the bathrooms were always wet and dirty-looking.

good decor though, and very nice indoor and outdoor common areas. they have two laundry machines available for use, which is good. staff is generally helpful although prices for private van hires and tours seemed exorbitant.

you need to take a cab or bus to get anywhere from the hostel except the green lake and the city center, and the bus directions posted in the lobby were not sufficient or detailed enough.

overall, an average place but with cool lounge space. i was here during golden week, so had to pay extra which is sorta lame.

Was here for a night onroute to Lijiang. Nice clean hostel with English speaking reception but do note that there is no air-conditioning in the whole place and for those with heavy luggage, the elevator is only available after a few narrow flights of stairs. Our ensuite twin room on the third floor has a toilet on the balcony with a glass partition!. Free wifi only available at bar area. Quite near the Green Lake and its eateries and good value for money.

Room Tip: Our room on the third floor was quiet enough.

We stayed here two nights and the position is quite nice, close to the beautiful green lake park. The rooms are clean and big enough. The reception staff is ok, they speak English but they are too fast, not enough patience to answer our questions. The restaurant is bad, the waiters don't understand English really well and they forgot your orders and they make a lot of other mistakes. The kitchen is super slow, you can wait forever! (more than one hour). It's just ok to sleep.

My brother and I are in our 70s and were referred to this hostel during our stay in Lijiang. We loved this place for its facilities, service, location and affordability. Especially location within a (metaphorical) stones throw from Green Lake away from the loud city center of Kunming where we had lodged previously. Great mixture of people, both Chinese and foreigners. You can get here from the airport on public transport--especially with the help of the folks at the hostel who can tell you which bus line to take after the metro and where to get off and how to give this info to the driver!!

Room Tip: Upper floor backside of this lodging would be my choice.

Stayed here 2 nights.
The most annoying thing was that I felt wronged. This was the only hostel I reserved over the phone, instead of using bookings.com or hostelworld. I called the hostel first, and asked for a private ensuite room for 2 nights. The woman on the phone offered me such room for 198 RMB. I asked several times if this is the price for 2 nights, and she said yes. But when I arrived to the place they said "sorry, you probably misunderstood, 198 RMB is the price for 1 night only". I was very angry, but at this point it was too late and I had no choice but to stay at this hostel.
So they offered me a cheaper room. It was clean and nice, but very small and with an ugly view to the back yard.
Excpet for this incident, the service was good. They helped me to plan trips to the stone forest and the minority village (see separate reviews I wrote), and explained how to arrive to the airport.
The location is fine, not great. From the train station you take a bus and then walk 10-15 minutes. The east and west bus stations are quite far away.

I stayed in the deluxe room.it was OK.I had better and I had worst. Nothing special. The internet in the room was the slowest I had for years. The dining area is nice, they got a pool table and many different beers, but people smoke there.
In the morning I waited 45 minutes for my eggs.I asked twice what's going on,I got answers like 'we make now's.eventually I asked my money back and went to eat outside. Overall if I had to comeback to Kunming, I'd probably try a different place.maybe the lost garden.

Kunming Upland Youth Hostel

Stayed here for a few days waiting for a visa extension. This took 5 days, by the way. Maybe Dali is a better bet!

Positives:
Sunny, well-lit room (the twin in 302, 402 etc)
Nice common areas (except for smoking in the bar area) and sun decks (except see note on remodeling below)
Good laundry facilities
Beer cheap and cold

Negatives:
Construction remodeling going on all over the place ... noise, mess, reduced access to common areas
Breakfast mediocre, even cold sometimes

Everything else was par for the course in Chinese youth hostels. We stayed in a twin room (#302) after a night or two in a much smaller double (507). The staff were helpful, and storing of luggage was possible.
Would stay here again in future, especially if the remodeling is done, because it will all look very nice then.

Room Tip: We don't do dorms. The double in room 507 is very small. That probably goes for every 07 room...
