“A Little History in the Big City”

Guandu Ancient Town
Reviewed August 10, 2012

Located in the south-west of Kunming City, stroll into a bit of history, through the ancient styled architecture, walking the stone streets and enjoy Yunnan pizza, or any of many delicious street snacks. Tour the three temples in the Stupa Square at the back of the town. Enjoy a wonderful meal in one of the traditional courtyard restaurants scattered throughout the town.

Guandu 官渡古城 is an OK place if you will be somewhere near anyhow. It's a new complex built in ancient style around a couple of small temples which are actually old.

It's not difficult to reach by public bus and charges no admission fee. It has the usual assortment of tourist trinket stalls and restaurants. plus some assorted shops.

If you go, be sure to try Guandu Baba 官渡巴巴 (not sure of the Chinese spelling) since it's the signature street snack. It's a flat disc of bread cooked on a curved griddle (like a huge wok) and you can choose one of several stuffings. The original place for these charges 3 Yuan a pop. There are imitators.

Guandu is also noted for its donkey meat restaurants. 驴肉。It can be very tender and delicious.

Spent an afternoon here and that's really all you need. The town is full of tourists. The temples are nice to see but it's not really exciting.
