Shangri-La Hotel,Xian
Ranked #6 of 2,616 Hotels in Xi'an

Best hotel in Xi'an? Huge swimming pool, excellent food, attentive staff, and the excursions/guides offered, while not cheap, were absolutely top-notch, really very high quality, and well worth paying the extra for.

While this is not a cheap hotel, I think some of the wine was overpriced, and would query the provenance of a Chilean white served in the bar. Try the Royalty Garden restaurant two minutes' walk from the hotel.

This is a beautiful hotel. We were shown direct to our room which was spacious with a bath and separate shower area. I only wish the outside of the windows were cleaned but I dare say they can't do that very often as it was the 8th floor.
I had a swim in the large pool which didn't feel like it was indoor because of the large windows. I was the only one there and, yes I had to wear a swimcap!
The hotel is a bit far from the centre but the taxis were inexpensive. We did walk to the small Goose Pagoda but it was a very long walk, about an hour but at least you can walk unlike Beijing.
The breakfast buffet was extensive. We took the tour to the Terracotta Army organised by the Hotel and enjoyed it very much. Penny speaks excellent English.

Having return from a multi-city tour of China, I will say the the Shangri-La Hotel chain should be considered by travelers. The room/bathrooms are spacious, service is impeccable (though some staff are much less fluent in English that other hotels, but still they are very helpful). The Siam Gardern and Yi Cafe are excellent "in-house" restaurants (though skip their version of scrambled eggs). I really appreciated the aspect of free, unlimited Wi-Fi in the room, lobby, bar, anywhere. (Seems to be a staple of the Shangri-La chain....kudos...many chains do not understand little things like this make visitors return!).

I can not fault this hotel in any way as through out our, disappointingly, brief two night stay the staff did their utmost to ensure that your every need was catered for. Breakfast was excellent, with all tastes catered for. The Tian Xiang Ge restaurant was both reasonable and flavoursome however I would suggest that you eat by 8pm at the latest as it becomes rather deserted after that time. We stayed in a Deluxe city room which was quite large and granted excellent views of the city. Whilst the hotel is quite removed from the centre of the city, having experienced both the noise and the traffic in the city centre I would strongly recommend staying here rather than a city centre hotel. Xian's traffic has to be experienced to be believed!!

Room Tip: Request a City view as opposed to a garden view and on as high a floor as possible. If eating in the...

Good Hotel for business, suitable rooms, good WiFi everywhere.
Good breakfast- mix of Asian and continental styles. Quick service. Good location. Did not have time to try the gym, so no idea if ok.
Good facilities for larger events.

An excellent stay at the Shangrila. From the moment we checked in, we were looked after very well. A bottle of water at check in. Shown the facilities and key areas, the bedroom was clean and free of smoke, breakfast was copious and of of high quality, the wine at a glass level selection was reasonable at the lobby lounge and he poura were generous. The concierge was efficient.......There is nothing more to say, just a great stay.

The only thing that prevent me from giving a five star, which I would if just marking the hotel, is the location related the old city but its not a reason to stay away from the Shang!

We cannot say enough good things about the Shangri-La Xi'an. After mixed experiences at luxury hotels in Beijing and Tianjin, this was a revelation. As soon as we walked in, the feeling was opulent but inviting. The lobby is beautiful and the rooms are, likewise, beautifully decorated and inviting. But what distinguishes this hotel is the level of service: at other hotels in China, we were hard pressed to find even one or two staff members who spoke fluently a language other than Chinese. Here we were greeted warmly at the front desk by Apple, a lovely Chinese woman who speaks English fluently and is as customer service oriented as the best we have seen anywhere. She was exceptional, but by no means a complete exception, as several other staff members also spoke English well and were delightfully friendly and helpful. The staff anticipated our needs at every turn, inquiring about our plans and suggesting various alternatives for accomplishing them. Ultimately they arranged for a guide and driver to take us to both the terra cotta warriors and the History Museum. The guide, Mike Yang, was superb, and the car they arranged was clean and comfortable. The staff also recommended dining options, helped us get to the airport and even tried to print our boarding cards in advance without our asking (though they were stymied by an uncooperative airline computer system).

They also offered us a free upgrade as Starwood members, which entitled us to use the special guest lounge for breakfast and any other time. This was on the 9th floor, with very nice views of Xi'an. The staff there were remarkably warm and attentive, and the breakfast was excellent.

For full disclosure, all was not perfect. The bathrooms are a bit dated in style (though they were clean and not unattractive) and ours had an occasional faint odor which appeared to be coming from an open vent in the floor near the toilet. Also, the hotel is located on a busy street and some of the views are not spectacular, though not problematic either. The location is not downtown, so you'll have to take cabs to get to various locations--though taxis fares are quite cheap in U.S. dollars. Finally, my wife found it difficult to get timely service in the lounge when she went down for a late lunch at about 3:30 pm. We had a very good experience at dinner in the actual restaurant, however. Finally, the free wifi did not work in our room--we had to use the cable--but it did work in the halls and common areas.

We regarded these as minor blips compared to the overall experience. It's remarkable how outstanding service can make such a difference, even when a few other elements may not necessarily be perfect. This stay was an absolute highlight of our 10 days in China!
