Shangri-La Hotel,Xian
Ranked #6 of 2,616 Hotels in Xi'an
Reviewed June 5, 2011

We had chosen Shangri-La's for our one night hopping around this part of China and were very impressed .We didn't encounter any of the issues mentioned of smoking rooms (and I for one couldn't sleep in a room someone had smoked in ) or poor service .Admittedly you do get the feeling this is very much a business hotel and it is on the large side.
The breakfast buffet was superb-a great range of all types of food from western to eastern. We ate out at the Theatre show (wouldn't particularly recommend the dinner there ) .
Like most people we went to this city to see the Terracotta warriors which were stunning-but th e traffic congestion on the roads was horrific so it is important to allow plenty of time to get to destinations and then some .

The Hotel was once perhaps grand but now shows its age and the many travelers that come and go each day. The rooms are not clean at all and are more in the class of a 3 star hotel in the states although the lobby is rather huge and opulent.
The staff is excellent and the restaurant had a great buffet. I was happy to only spend one night in the hotel. It is not the staffs fault that the hotel rooms are dingy and I think it is the best hotel there.

Room Tip: just make sure no one has smoked in the room

There was nothing to find fault with in this hotel. Shangri la service is exceptional, every member of the staff showed it. The senior managers were everywhere, that motivated the others. Every member of the staff seemed well trained and they knew their duties very well. We were only sad we didn't have enough time to spend in the hotel as we were out exploring the wonders of the terra cotta warriors, cycling on the wall, visiting museums and pagoda. A wonderful stay and we highly recommend this hotel for leisure or business.

From the front desk greeting, complete with freshly made pineapple and orange juice, to the already set up room with the extra bed for our child, to the flawless check out, all was perfect!

This hotel was superb in almost every respect: The overall service, the food, the amenities, room comfort, etc, etc.! However--and maybe this was just back luck on our part--we encountered smoking issues several times. First, we requested both a quite and a non-smoking room, and despite the fact we checked in on the Horizon Club floor, we were given a room facing a busy road that was smoking. The fact it was a smoking room didn't bother us as much as the terrible smell. We were then moved the next day to another room . . . guess what . . . it reeked of smoke! We were told it wasn't supposed to be a smoking room, but the smell and ashtrays indicated otherwise. Finally, we got a very good hostess who took real good care of us and put us into a suite for the balance of our stay. While the room wasn't on the Horizon floor, we didn't really care as we loved the accommodations. A little bad luck turned into some good luck! While we really enjoyed the buffet breakfast on the Horizon floor, we had to eat downstairs one day because of some Thai princess (?) and her entourage took over the Horizon club area . . . but that inconvenience turned into a positive as well as the buffet breakfast in the lobby restaurant was stupendous. After that, we ate there almost every morning. If you stay her, I would recommend paying to be on the Horizon club floor if you can do it for a modest fee. The Spa was nice, but the massages my wife and I each had were only so-so . . . that might have been our fault since we didn't really given them any instructions. Should note while sitting in the non-smoking area of the lounge, folks were smoking. My wife and I found it very annoying given we are no longer use to smelling so much cigarette smoke . . . maybe it's a cultural thing? Anyway, I would give this hotel the benefit of the doubt and still highly recommend it assuming few will encounter to the extent the problems we did.

Room Tip: make sure they give you exactly what you want!

The service, room, gym, and main restaurant are all excellent. The room we stayed in was spotless and very quiet. The restaurant/food bar has everything from sushi to noodle bar - very good. And, very important to us - the gym was up-to-date with really helpful staff. Be sure to ask for equipment you might not see on the gym floor because they likely have it.. We will stay here the next time we visit Xi'an.

We had 7 rooms at the Shangri La of which 2 are business suites.
Upon arrival the resident manager came out to our coach to personally greet us & took us to the Horizon Lounge for checking in, checking in was done smoothly whilst we chilled out at the buffet & surfed the web. The hotel itself is very grande, yet keeping in line with the traditional Chinese feel.

We were taken to our rooms, we had a suite, it was a nice size with hot jasmine tea & fruit bowl & welcome card waiting for us in the living room.

All amenities are by L'occitane & it was replaced everyday after use, you will find everything you need incl kimono's, dressing gowns, slippers, bath salt, shower puff etc. There was a humidifier in the room so our skin was not dry, there was a set of Sennheiser headphones for listening to music & ipod docking in the bedroom, there were all kinds of tea leaves as well as coffee machine.

Wifi was available everywhere apart from the restaurant Tian Xiang Ge maybe because we were in a private dinning room, not sure...the food in the restaurant is good, would totally recommend the egg tart with the edible birds nest.

Spa is very nice, very professional & treatments are great, the girls are the spa are very sweet!

The level of service here is impeccable & once checked out, the manager walked us to the coach, waved us good bye until the coach was out of sight of the hotel.
Would totally recommend to stay here!
