“European Elegance in the Heart of China”

My husband & I stayed at the Mercure on Renmin Square on a 13 day trip to China. It was 1 of 3 hotel as that we stayed at. Being part of the Soffitel chain this hotel has a lovely ambiance. The staff is very warm, friendly and well trained. As the hotel chain is French, the management here capitalizes on this and although the staff are Chinese we were frequently greeted with "Bonjour" that I found utterly charming. Also, being French, the female staff are dressed in very chic black suits, with black hose and shoes and very well groomed. Again, very charming. I work in the Beauty Business so I notice these things.

We were upgraded to a junior suite that had modern decor, was a very good size and extremely comfortable. There were high quality linens and towels.

The overall hotel complex is very well maintained, with beautiful fresh flowers throughout.

The breakfast buffet is the standard fare. We ate at the Moroccan restaurant in the hotel and thoroughly enjoyed it and found it to be good value and a very pleasant change from an endless diet of very bland and unappetizing Chinese food that was consistently disappointing during our trip.

A little about us. We are in our mid fifties, travel extensively worldwide and are prepared to pay for 5 star hotels & meals. All in all we very much enjoyed our stay at this property.

If you are staying in Xian for a few days to see the Terra Cotta Warriors or even for business, I'd highly recommend the Mercure on Renmin Square for the following reasons:

1) it's in a great location - 15 minutes walk from the train station and a 20 minute walk into town
2) it's clean, modern and spacious rooms
3) you can use the facilities in the Sofitel which includes a good size gym, swimming pool and hot tub free of charge - fantastic for a 3 star hotel - why pay for the Grand Mercure when you can use all the same facilities for a better price?
4) the buffet at the Sofitel was of good quality and a great selection (we struggled to find decent restuarants in Xian so this was a nice treat)

The only negative is the staff at the front desk were a little rude and quite unhelpful, but this was typical of the hotels we stayed at in China. But one good thing is that most the staff spoke very good English.

We spent 3 great nights at this hotel. It is part of the Sofitel chain located on the square --- Sofitel, Grand Mercure, and Mercure. We couldn't have been happier with our room(upgraded to a suite), location and don't miss the breakfast. Easy to walk to Bell and Drum Towers, Muslim District and outstanding dumpling meals.

Room Tip: We asked for an upgrade when we arrived. We were given one on the first floor --- think it may have...

This hotel is in a compound with a few other hotels. The hotel itself was pretty nice. I found the staff to be really pleasant and helpful with excellent English- much better than in some more expensive hotels which I have stayed.

We had a deluxe twin room which was a really nice size, lovely and clean with a television, desk, internet, a nice big bathroom and a view of the square. Even the beds were quite comfortable.

During our stay we made use of the swimming pool at the neighbouring Sofitel which is complimentary and really lovely. The Sofitel also has a cocktail bar with pianist in the lobby, which is nice for a drink after a long day sightseeing. There is also a nice little club/bar if you want something a bit more lively. The food in the restaurant in the Sofitel was amazing- really recommend it, the buffet was amazing.

It's a 20 minute or so walk to anything, so good if you like a stroll, though the staff will happily sort you a taxi. Great little hotel.

The Mercure is not the swishest hotel in the Accor complex in Renminbi Sq, it is a little worn, but the price is right. Restaurants in the hotel complex are a bit expensive and it is a reasonable walk to the alternatives, but otherwise the complex is safe and quiet. The big surprise came at checkout when the clerk would not refund our large deposit because of a system fault but was prepared to take more money on the same fault. When this inconsistency was pointed out, they did pay, but we and several other guests were quite disappointed at the fiasco at 5.15 am. Unfortunately, the circus became worse when the hotel ordered taxis -- legal with meters -- arrived without meters and a rather excessive price. The hotel concierge tells us "this is how things are done in Xian, no meters!" but with a bit of tough talk the meter is found under the seat of the taxi and we make it to the airport for half the quoted price. The scam could only have been contemplated with concierge complicity, and we have been advised by hotel management, that they have dealt with the perps and cleaned up their act.

Very Satisfied at Mercure Xian!!

My husband recently (may/June 2012) spent three weeks in China/Hong Kong for my 29th birthday & our 1 year wedding anniversary. We stayed in 4 different Hotels & also spent a night on an overnight train from Beijing to Xian.

All of our hotels we booked had 4 or more stars or so it read. Some even reading 5 stars.

Mercure Renmin Square Xian was well above our expectations. The best accommodation we stayed in during our trip. I booked through expedia during a 50% off special. I booked for two nights paying roughly $70 per night. We had an enjoyable comfortable 2 nights in Xian.

Prior to arriving I emailed the hotel direct informing them the reason for our travel, enquiring about airport transfers & tours. I got a prompt reply. I was advised that a limousine service was available however I found the price offered rather expensive but at the same rate as other hotels I planned to stay in. I was also informed in the email that I would receive an upgrade.

My husband & I arrived at the Mercure around 9am hoping for our bags to be stored until later that afternoon when we returned from a tour of the terracotta warriors. We were informed by the kind staff at check in that our room was available and we could check in. This was great as we had just got of a 11 hour train ride from Beijing. Check in was smooth & quick.

We were upgraded to a business suite. The business suite was huge. A large lounge room with ottoman and a wide section of TV channels. There was a large desk which could have easily had a laptop & any office files spread out on. The room was clean & the furniture was well kept. The carpet had a few minor stains that were barely noticed & the only fault we had with our accommodation.

The bedroom was not overly big but enough room to have a large king size bed, side tables , another tv with the variety of channels & enough room to walk around the bed. For a hotel in China the bed was comfortable (I've read in other reviews that beds are hard). The sheets were clean & pillows comfortable.

There was a wardrobe & an in room safe. All worked well and a good size.

The bathroom was not overly big but suffice. The vanity was small but had enough room for personal toiletries & the generous amenities supplied. The bath and shower were combined. It was clean despite my personal opinion of shower curtains being poor.

The hotel itself was decorated nice. The hotel was within its own little gated area of the city walls. Renmin square. My husband and I had no issues with walking to the Muslim quarter for dinner & the following day to the bell & drum tower (over a kilometre but a good interesting walk).

Breakfast was not included & I did not eat at any of the restaurants or order room service to comment.

During checkout I learnt that a taxi to the airport was only 150CNY, set price. Substantial amount cheaper than the private limousine transfer offered by the Mercure. Something to keep in mind if requiring transfers.

I would definitely stay here again. I really don't see the need in paying more for the Grand Mercure when the Mercure on Renmin is great.

Room Tip: 3308 Business suite is great

We spent 3 nights here. Rooms were nice and clean but disliked the location. It was set in a hotel "compound" with the other Accor hotels, far away from local sights and restaurants (such as Muslim Street - a must do) and required a taxi or a long walk.

If location isn't an issue then the Mecure was overal pretty good. Good value, nice and clean and they let us check-in early. Restaurant food was overpriced but acceptable.
