Having spent few weeks travelling in China, and with anotehr few weeks ahead of me, it was nice to stay in a hotel which had western sensitivities. As much as I love immersing myself in the local environment, sometimes you just need somewhere to relax at the end of a day touring. Somewhere that is clean, quiet and without the sounds and smells of a bustling city. The Mecure on Renmin Square offered this.
With it's sister hotels onsite; the Soffitel and Mercure Grand, there is plenty of variety for eating. Be sure to check out the buffet lunch at the Soffitel's Azur restaurant. Something for everyone.
For those who just want to veg out for a bit, the room service is reasonably priced and there is a good selection from which to choose.
The staff are helpful and able to advise on tour options and transport. The concierge was able to arrange a taxi for me for the day so that I could get out to Han Yang Ling Tombs (highly, highly recommended!) as well as recommend group tours for the warriors, pagodas and other local sites.
Note: the hotel does offer a car service for airport transfers; however, it's on the pricey end of the scale. A taxi is a portion of the price and the front desk can arrange one for you.More
