OMG...couldn't believe the total awesomeness of this SUITE!! Literally like 007, biggest glass bathroom I have ever been in or seen. Even the "commode" was a glass box. (HMMM?) But then the old "russian" plumbing reared it's ugly head, when the shower "room" started to back up and flow into the suite. Better the shower than the throne! Maintenance was on it immediately, and it was a truly memorable stay! October 2005.

Room Tip: Go with what you know; Ritz, Sofitel, Hilton, Fairmont when in China.

It's a large, beautiful hotel but an accumulation of little things made it hard to love.

Since it's billed as the Sofitel Xi'an on Renmin (People's) Square, we thought we'd be right in the city center. Come to find out, Xi'an doesn't have a Renmin Square, so the Accor group slapped the name on this three-hotel complex next to the government center and a minor public square. The name's come by honestly, though, at least by Chinese standards: the property was the site of a government building before being converted to private use about a decade ago.

Our huge, upgraded "nonsmoking" room reeked of smoke. The substitute - though we'd asked for a room with view - was on a middle floor with planters blocking any view of the street (but not all of the noise) and a floodlight shining right into the window at night. The maid refused several times to give us extra washcloths, although when we called housekeeping she was forced to hand some over. Despite a preponderance of foreign guests, English at the front desk was spotty. When I ordered miso soup in the Japanese restaurant, the waitress didn't mention that it also came with my entree. And so on.

The buffet breakfast looked great but the quality was disappointing. Steamed buns looked promising but there were only two varieties. On the first day, the substitute noodle chef - it's a local specialty - drew complaints for lack of flavor and not enough broth. (The regular chef did fine.)

We stayed in the West Tower, so had a five minute hike to breakfast in the East Tower. The grounds aren't laid out for walking; paths around the fountain dead-end so we had to dodge cars in the driveways. The back door out to the street, so convenient on our first day to get to a nearby restaurant, was locked on subsequent days, requiring a four minute hike down the aforementioned driveway.

On the good side, breakfast is served from 5:30 am. The prices in the four international restaurants are reasonable for an international hotel and the Moroccan one even provides free bread, dips and mint tea to go with their tasty offerings.

As a Sofitel, this hotel promises a lot. It doesn't deliver all, but for Xi'an it might do well enough.

Stayed for two nights just so we could see the Terracotta Warriors. After a full on day sight seeing we were ready to relax and have a nice meal without trekking too far.
Buffet is not us at all, checked out the other options and didn't fancy anything on offer.
We walked outside to see what was on offer elsewhere. We bumped into a young lady who asked if she could help? She directed us to the Italian at the newly opened Peoples Hotel. As it happened she then was our waitress. we had a lovely meal concluded with a tour of the hotel by one of the Butlers.
Wish the hotel had been an option when we were booking our trip last year.
Back to the Sofitel rooms are comfortable,beds lovely linens etc. had no issues with housekeeping.
I had to do a bit of work whilst I was away young lady in the Business Centre helped me get some emails printed as I was experiencing a lot if difficulties in China getting access. Wifi was good in the rooms.
As many others have mentioned breakfast is a bit hit and miss.

Elegant, classy twin towers form this upscale hotel situated in a protected compound near many of the attractions of the old city. Rooms were large, comfortable and beautifully furnished. Bathrooms were spacious and very clean. Service was outstanding. Breakfast buffet was very good with a vast variety of Chinese and continental options including made to order omelets. Each tower has a spacious lobby area. Several restaurants on site including a wine bar. Guide said its the best hotel in the city.

We were on a tour and the guide had checked us all in somehow prior to our arrival. She then handed out our keys on arrival. We had rooms in the West wing and the rooms are quite nice and modern and a reasonable size with a safe and walk in wardrobe, and a kettle and cups. The rooms are serviced twice a day but on the first night we were getting ready for bed when she called. She rang the bell about 6 times and when I answered she gave me my goodnight chocolates.
On day 2 our room was serviced when we were out but they didn't leave us any bath towels. A quick call to housekeeping and they arrived in about 10 mins.
We had dinner on our first night at around 19.30 in the Azur buffet restaurant and had to walk about 200 m to the East Wing which is OK when it is not raining. The dinner was poor except for the starter selection which was good with a good selection of seafood and salads. Many of the hot dish containers were empty or almost empty and the others had food that looked as though it had been there for some time. There wasn't a sign to say that there was any show cooking so you have to find something from the troughs. There is if course a large selection of Chinese foods but we didn't try them. So I finished up with beef stroganoff on fried rice. The beef was tasty and well cooked but not hot. For desert I tried the bread and butter pudding but it was inedible and almost cold so I had a piece of cheesecake which was OK. The chairs in the dining room are very low so unless you are higher than 1.8m you will find a problem. We came to this hotel from the Yangtze Explorer ship which had a similar problem but provided cushions.
Breakfast? Well same story. The Azur opens at 05.30 and it looked as though some of the food had been there since before then when we went for breakfast at 07.30. Most of the hot food wasn't or the container was empty. There is a cooking point for eggs but I didn't see the sign until on the way out. Distinct lack of fresh fruit which we heard was due to some Chinese filling bags for a take away.
Coffee is provided in a small cafetiere but trying to get a refill is a bit of a challenge as is getting your dirty dishes taken away.
The hotel is in a good location but we didn't have time to explore the city other than a tour to the city walls.
I emailed the hotel prior to our arrival and asked them to input my a-club number but they didn't reply. I gave them the card at reception and they said they had input the details but no points came through for the stay. I have emailed them since we returned and they did reply saying that no points are due as not booked direct?
Wifi is available free in your room and the log in details are shown on the room key wallet.
So in summary hotel is ok but food is poor.

Good quality hotel of international standard. Modern and well maintained, but lacking much Chinese influence, so you could be almost anywhere in the World.
I'd booked a twin room on a Club floor for four nights, and at the Club reception was upgraded to a Club King bedded suite at no extra cost. The staff in the Club Room were exceptional, and simply couldn't do enough for you, making you feel a valued guest. I don't eat a large breakfast, so took advantage of the breakfast in the Club Room, which offers an abbreviated menu/choice compared with the main restaurant downstairs, but it is of good quality and, again, served by the attentive and helpful staff. That is not to say that the staff elsewhere in the hotel were not of a very high standard.
I suppose the only downside is that the Sofitel is not close to the main attractions in Xi'an, but I'd still recommend it.
