It was part of the Grand Mercure franchise in a tri-hotel complex. Secluded from the hustle and bustle of the rest of Xi'an, the hotel was quite good. Rooms were clean and food in the restaurants in the complex were good.

We had a bad experience with the staff refusing to change the room to a non smoking one saying they were booked up until we said there were allergies involved. but after that it was ok.

Clean place, newer decor, recently renovated. Internet service is available for free if I remember right. There is also a club in the hotel that gets quite wild with good music and a crowd.

This hotel had the worst beds we had slept on throughout China. Rock hard was an understatement. The hotel was supposedly a four star but I would rate as a two. The rooms were tiny and the bathroom was even smaller. Free toiletries and kettle but the overall lustre of the hotel had gone a long time ago. The adjoining Sofitel was very nice and we went through to there to enjoy an evening meal which was very good. The hotel restaurant was poor and the choice for breakfast was very western and limited. The service in the restaurant was also poor. The hotel location was not very central and it took approximately 20 minutes to walk to the centre. We were located at the back of the hotel which had the advantage of being quiet but I would not stay at this hotel again, I would stay at the Sofitel which is within the grounds.

This hotel was functional. Only stayed here for one night. The front of the hotel was unimpressive. Appeared like a relic of the communist building. The same for the hallways. Room was fine, although a little small. Bathroom was crowded. Key here is the the hotel was functional...
Breakfast was pretty good, in that there was a lot to choose from, but nothing was specially great.
It was within easy walking distance to bell tower and drum tower, and the street market. Concierge was great, as they helped me hire a cab for one day.
Must be very carefull when walking in this city. Even the sidewalks are dangerous.

  • Liked — location was close to in-city attractions
  • Disliked — hotel a little hard to find, as it is BEHIND another hotel

I picked this hotel based on the excellent reviews here but was quite disappointed with the experience. First the good news. Upon checking-in, I was told that I was upgraded to a suite as the type of room i requested was overbooked. Second and final positive comment is on the location of this hotel. You can visit most of the interesting spots of the old town by foot (if you are in good shape).
On the negative side. First there was no bellboy to welcome me so I had to carry my luggage up the stairs to the lobby. Then the drain of the shower was clogged resulting in an alarming high level of water when I showered. I pointed out this problem to the assistant manager but it was not fixed in my 4 days there. The lighting in the bathroom was very poor, making shaving quite a challenge. As far as the breakfast buffet is concerned, I should point out the very limited selection. In addition, the dining room is not large enough for the size of the hotel. On my first morning I went for breakfast ar around 8am (peak time) and there was no place to sit so I was offered to share a table with 7 strangers. I declined and returned after 9am instead.
Also my room temperature was quite cold making it rather uncomfortable to sleep. On the next morning I asked the maid how to get some heat but it appears that there is no heat (or it is turned off in April) so she suggested to put the fan at "off". I opened the windows in the afternoon when the weather got a little warmer outside.
Finally, i was charged 50RMB per day for internet access. My reservation said that my room included "broadband", it did not mention I had to pay extra for it. I assumed it would be the case but i have to admit that they write it in such a way that you can read this both ways. The booking also referred to flat screen TV while i had regular TVs, not that I cared as I did not watch TV any ways. Not a great experience for 1200RMB per night.

Nothing much to add to previous reviews, but to agree with the sentiments. Attentive staff, large room, excellent facilities, good food and great location - what more do you need from a hotel!

We arrived early, off the shanghai train and were able to check in on arrival. Special mention to William who was arranged a larger room as we were travelling with our son and generally made us feel very welcome.

Large end of corridor room with two doubles and large bathroom with seperate tub and shower (with good pressure!). All facilities in room as you'd expect of the sofitel group.

Breakfast provided in large dining room with brilliant spread of asian and western food - several chefs on hand to prepare fresh noodle or egg dishes. You may need to keep getting your own coffee refills as the waiting staff are always task orientated though.

The Mercure is without a resautant, bar or any other facilities of note because everything is provided in the sofitel. Brilliant spa & pool, tempting cake and tea shop & good restaurants take you away from the city outside. Havana club offers good nightlife if you enjoy ear splitting decibel levels!

Overall, the rooms in the Mercure are better than those in the Sofitel at a % of the price, and you get all the benefits of the sofitel - it's not a hard choice, is it?
