Grand Mercure made us feel excellent when tavelling in Xian. The hotel service is great and people are very nice and helpful. I asked for a non smoking room via email and got its promptly reply. That made us very comfortable. I hope we could say "Thanks so much" to Evan, when we went to our room and saw it grand and cosy.
Breakfast was gorgeous and even that I could see a chief to make my noodle from a dough. It's just like a show and he made it for every guest order. I can see the hotel make efforts to serve customer best.
The Hotel is located at quiet garden and surrounding. It's good for us to relax. Especially, we were exhausted after sight seeing to Emperor Qinshihuang Mausoleum, Dayan Pagoda and etc. It's a wonderful to get a hot bath and go to sleep well.
In Grand Mercure Xian, the bed and pillows are soft and good quality same as 5 stars hotel stardard. I think there is a Sofitel that the Accor group differentiates Grand Mercure and intends to vary stardard and price among them. Grand Mercure will be a right choice to people looking for a best price at high stardand.

The hotel was ideal for our 5 days break in Xi'An in November.
On a quiet square in an Accor compound the hotel has good sized rooms, not the most stylish but comfortable, well equipped and clean. Except one restaurant all other facilities are shared with the Sofitel next door, which is not an issue.
Breakfast buffet was ok but nothing thrilling, service was good with a genuine attention from the staff, all smiling and helpful! Food though was not always the most appealing and sometimes freshness was questionable.
Location is great cause in you are right in the center of the old city and walking distance to the city wall, muslim quarter (amazing for street food), bus station to the Soldiers and the south district and its Heritage streets and museum.

Definitely a good recommendation!

the grand Mercure Xi'an is a good hotel with good spacious room. Renmin square is a good place to stay, quiet compare of the rest of the city. you can walk to some good restaurant outside.
only negative point is you have to go to Sofitel for the swimming pool and other facilities as these hotels are sharing their facilities

I've been staying at the Sofitel, Grand Mercure, and Mercure for years. For reasons I won't go into here, my family and I stay at this hotel every time we visit Xi'An, which is quite often.

First, the good:
-The hotel is a quiet sanctuary in Renmin Square, and former government/Soviet square. Hence, the "odd" layout that others have referred to. However, I find it to be a nice escape from the hustle and bustle.
-They upgraded us to a nice suite upon check-in, which was very nice.
-Room was very comfortable with a very large living room, with a separate bathroom. I've stayed in suites at the Sofitel and this was comparable.
-Price is very affordable
-They provided a humidifier, which was a welcome relief from the dry winter air
-jacuzzi tub!
-Service is great, as with all the Accor properties. Very friendly staff
-Breakfast buffet is fantastic with many Western and Chinese options, including a full omelette bar, wonton and noodle bar, dim sum, pastries, cheeses, yogurts, etc.
-did I mention Jacuzzi tub?!

Second, the "okay"
-Hotel can be a tad bit dated, but not too much. The Sofitel/Grand Mercure were one of the first western-style five star hotels in Xi'An. However, we noticed that the bathroom fixtures and such were upgraded from the last time we stayed here, which was very nice
-Bathroom is a little colder than the rest of the room, but with the very nice hot water, it was ok
-Location can be a bit out of the way for tourists, but it was ok for us.
-As a guest of the GrandMercure or Mercure, you can use the Sofitel gym and pool, which are very nice. However, you will have to walk over outside in the cold.

Third, the bad:
-Taxis are hit or miss. Many will not pick you up unless you are going to the airport or some pricey tourist destination. I'm not sure, but the bell staff may have some sort of deal going on with the taxi drivers. Many are unwilling to drive poeple like us (Chinese-speaking people who are not tourists but are in town for other reasons) to local destinations that are not very far away. Hence, we waited 45 minutes for a taxi to take us to lunch! For this reason alone, we may end up switching our loyalty to one of the other hotels now in Xi'An. Xi'An has become a very competitive hotel space, with many international brands opening up new hotels. We love Accor and stay with many of their hotels around the world, but the taxi situation is kind of a pain.

Not sure what the history of the complex this hotel is situated in is, but I expect it had something to do with the government as the entire square is located in an area housing a number of government and state agencies. This geographical placement lends itself to a number of factors that visitors may or may not like. During office and daylight hours on weekdays, traffic in the surrounding area can be quite horrendous as it's an area where the local traffic and population crowds for official government-related activities. And then during after-office hours, it dies down considerably and trying to find establishments outside of the hotel complex for food and other essentials becomes somewhat tricky. It's a business area and there's not much in the area of civic activities.

As it was some kind of government administrative building in the recent past, the building in which the hotel is housed was not purpose-built to house guests/visitors, so if you're unfortunate to have been placed in the wing furthest from the check-in desk of the hotel, it becomes a bit of a warren of dead/mystery corridors - not ideal if you have a lot of luggage.

As an international standard hotel, the Grand Mercure is decent and about as good as you're likely to find in Xi'an. With decent wifi and "international" cuisine in its sister hotels that share the square. The hotel itself does not have a fully-functioning 24-hour restaurant - breakfast dining is in the far end of the hotel but becomes dormant after that first meal of the day. For other meals, you will have to cross the courtyard to the nearby Sofitel where a number of other restaurants can be found.

Quiet/Peace is a rare commodity in many Chinese hotels as guests who stay in any that are situated on main roads will have to bear with the incessant noise of traffic which is nearly inescapable in urban China. I was there for work and colleagues who arrived before I did were first placed in the Bell Tower Hotel - much more centrally-located in downtown Xi'an - but their experience verged on the intolerable for a work-related situation: bad traffic noise, non-functioning internet connections and staff that could only just about manage communication in English.

If you're in Xi'an to see the Terracotta Army, do note that the museum is at least 1 hr away by private transport. Traffic in Xi'an is very heavy and there are other hotels closer to the site.

Room Tip: Ask to be closer to the check-in desk. Rooms are small so extra beds will not fit into the rooms.

We stayed there 2 nights as part of a China tour. The room is a standard size and comfortable. The only annoying thing was needed to go back down to the front desk to pay a 100 RMB deposit in advance to use the phone in the room (they didn’t inform such when we checked in), which seems to be a common practice in China. The buffet breakfast is what we enjoyed most as it offered a variety of choices with excellent quality and services, and the make-to-order omelet is a must-have for us every morning.
The hotel is near the political center of Xian, in a gated complex with pretty gardens, neat and quiet. It's also not very far from a metro train station, and pass through the underground path, across the street there is an indoor shopping center where you can find snacks, drinks, fast food, clothing, etc.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the garden.
