“Interesting peek into China's past”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2013

Having no previous experience with Chinese calligraphy or the history of the stone tablets and steles, I felt like I was at a bit of a disadvantage here. Our tour guide was moderately helpful in explaining the significance of the tablets, but an English guidebook would have made the experience a little more meaningful. After a while, the Chinese characters start to blend together in rivers of inscriptions, and while one can appreciate the effort that went into the creation, I never got a sense of WHY these tablets were created and their purpose. The accompanying sculpture museum was interesting.

“A wonderful trip back in time”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2013

The Steles contain important classical chinese texts that were used to pass knowledge from generation to generation. They remarkably survived the cultural revolution and are a true treasure. You will also see a wonderful collection of hitching posts. (that's right) and a small museum of paintings and sculptures. This is a great rainy day activity!

This was a bit expensive but still worth the visit. it is just quite a few stone tablets with inscriptions. its got a few stone steles that make up a "forest" but not something i would cry about missing.

“Beilin Museum is a gem!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 22, 2013

The museum is in town, but located on the peaceful grounds of an ancient Confucian monastery. There are big ancient steles, various types of calligraphy, and some beautiful ancient statuary - some of it only recently found -nicely displayed. Many of the pieces are accompanied by interesting commentary about the authors or the text. My favorite was the "wild cursive" calligraphy of "Zhang the Mad" carved on a stele from the Tang Dynasty era (600-900AD).

“See the rhino”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2013

This place can be a bit tricky to find. It is under the south wall and best is to start from the south gate and ask for the Confucius (Kung Tse) temple.
The forest of steles is impressive but you need to know a bit about Chinese culture (more than us) to appreciate it properly. But do not miss the exhibition of Han dynasty carvings and sculpture in the second hall. They keep finding stuff every time they start a new building project and so there is a good supply of new artefacts.
We particularly liked the wall friezes of dailt life and the massive rhino that looms out of the dark
