We were lucky to be here on a quiet day and enjoyed the tour with our private guide. The history is remarkable.

When you travel in Asia you eventually succumb to temple fatigue. No matter how individually impressive the all start to look the same. The pagoda in the forbidden city is more impresive and by the time we got to the Big Wild Goose we had seen several. Having said that its a nice temple and quite nice to visit if you are not already templed out.

I visited Dayanta six years ago in a hurry, and did not climb up to the top. This time, I did and I highly recommend to travelling friends when in Xi'An. If you wish to choose between entering the Big Wild Good pagoda (Dayanta) and the Bell Tower/Drum Tower, choose this one. A long history of Monk Xuan Zhang spending years translating Buddhist scriptures that he carried back from India after about 20 years of travelling and staying there during the Tang dynasty. You can see a very nice view of Xi'An because of its impressive height. On steep stairs and no elevator, however.

While it's not so much that I disliked it I just found that it was a lot of hype (and overpriced) over nothing really. The gounds are lovely to wander around and the views from the pagoda and wonderful

The temple and surrounding area was well done, both beautiful and peaceful. We enjoyed a pleasant stroll around the grounds. Outside the entrance was a park, and enjoyed seeing the people enjoying the city by flying kites and kids with streamers. The park was packed, inside was quiet and enjoyable. Would recommend if I were advising friends. We did have an english guide who explained the different aspects of the grounds, would have been not as interesting without an english guide. There are lost of restaurants across the street if you are hungry.
