“Worth traveling across the country”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

It was wonderful to see this amazing feat of human workmanship and endurance. It is hard to comprehend how it was achieved and then lay hidden until very recently.
While in the area go and see 'The Song of Everlasting Sorrow' at the Summer Palace. A stunning outdoor show with a mountain as a backdrop, performers on stages which rise out of pools and magnificent lighting.

“Awe-inspiring site... A must see in China!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 11, 2013

The story of the terra cotta soldiers, how they came to be there, how they got discovered, and the way they have been preserved and are being restored is a site not to be missed on any visit to China. It takes about 3 hours to see the whole site, and a one hour car ride from Xian each way. Well worth it, even if you are not particularly interested in archeology. The way the government has chosen to showcase this discovery is quite modern and western in many ways.

“breathtaking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

The excavation site is very large and only 30-40% of excavations are yet completed. I watched the national geographic documentary on PBS but nothing prepares for this in reality: the detail , the individualized features, the colors on newly restored objects. ( Initially the lacquered layer of paint disappeared as soon as the fragments were brought into the air and dried up. This has now been prevented by a new technique and makes the impression so much more alive -like).

“Definitely worth a vist!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

Of course if your coming to Xi'an the chances are you already have the Terracotta Army on your radar! It's definitely worth seeing anyway if it isn't! I would recommend on visiting the Pits in a different order though, if you do the 2nd and 3rd first and then do the 1st pit last as of course you would be saving the most spectacular until last. If you went to the them in order I guess you would be a little underwhelmed with the last 2 :)!
