This hotel is very large and caters to large group tours. It is big and glossy and very comfortable. An extensive breakfast buffet is offered, but it can get quite hectic when several bus tours are preparing to leave at the same time. Rooms were large and comfortable and offered all expected amenities. Location was difficult for all but vehicular traffic. There was little one could walk to in the immediate area, since an elevated highway is immediately in front of the hotel. Noise in the rooms was not a problem, however.

We recently stayed at he Shangri-La for one night as part of a tour group. The hotel could use a little renovation/updating in parts, but is still very nice. (We had just stayed at the Shangri-La in Shanghai so we were comparing it to that hotel.) We used the health club and pool, which was a bonus. The breakfast was quite impressive with choices for every taste/nationality. One word of warning: the location is problematic at the moment because they are building a subway station very close to the hotel and the traffic is a nightmare.

We stayed on the Horizon Club floor and found the service to be outstanding. The service was both genuine and personal. The manager (Angel Li) helped with tour bookings, cars etc with a real desire to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable.

The hotel is outside the city wall in west Xi'an and you need a taxi to get to the city centre or the museum and other tourist sights.

The hotel restaurant (Shang Palace) was not to the same standard as the other amenities but the coffee shop (the Coffee Garden) was much better value.

Room Tip: Horizon Club floor is worth the extra.

There are 2 shangri-la hotels in Xi'an and this is the ugly step-sister. Probably a joint venture with a local company , it's called Golden Flower with scant mention of the shangri-la brand and if you experience the hotel you can understand the shangri-la management's distancing. I stayed at this hotel many years ago and this 2nd time tells me they haven't done squat in refurbishing in the last 15 years. The lobby is large, but old and a throwback to the 80s. The service is average, not the kind shangri-la dishes out in many other places. The room is large too, enough to fit 4 sofas, but the good points end there. The tv is the vintage cathode ray tube non-flat type, i didn't even turn it on while i was there for fear of internal combustion. The bathroom doesn't have a standing shower stall of course. The view faces the carpark. Breakfast in the hotel restaurant was slightly above average if you take all the decrepit local hotels in china (or the world) into account.

Room Tip: Avoid carpark view?

Stayed for two nights here as part of our extensive tour of China.
As mentioned by others it is a bit off the centre but relatively peaceful in this frenetic city.
We were upgraded to a serviced appartment, which was so large that I had to make my wife leave a trail of breadcrumbs so that I could find her again !
Service was excellent, with a great breakfast and a restaurant meal which was extremely good value for money.
Apart from the obvious amazing spectacle of the terracotta exhibition, Xi'an is noted for its cuisine of dumplings.
We ventured out on our first night to a very "local" restaurant round the corner from the hotel
where in the whole street we were the only "westerners". We had our dumplings and a few other dishes that we pointed to and they were all delicious. There were six of us and the locals had great fun watching us devour their sort of food.
Must say that at no time did we feel threatened or worried about the neighbourhood around the hotel.
The hotel was extremely busy with groups staying, but they were directed to another dining area for breakfast so there was never a problem with service.
The staff were immaculate and the young ladies at reception a joy to behold.
This hotel is certainly to be recommended for your stay in Xi'an

Room Tip: Avoid any rooms with interconnecting door, as insulation poor. Ask for a high floor in the Executve Wing.
