“Renovated Rooms, mediocre dining room, bad WiFi”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2014

We stayed at the Bell Tower Hotel in October 2013 and thought it was just OK. This is a good, central location next to a subway entrance. We were not comfortable enough to walk around after dark though. Our room had been renovated and was pretty nice. There were some very faint traces of cigarette smoke smell, but I suspect that is because Chinese will smoke in a non-smoking room. It was large, well appointed, and clean. Typical of our experience in Beijing, the bed was a platform style arrangement with a thin mattress on it - good for back trouble but a little hard for our taste. We were on the front of the hotel and enjoyed the show, with traffic going through the four-lane roundabout. It was a little noisy but tolerable with the windows closed and the drapes drawn. The food in the restaurant was mediocre at best and poor the rest of the time. They rely heavily on their buffet and the English translations both there and in the menu are pretty funny. A "robin" sandwich was a hot ham and cheese, which the waitress pronounced as Reuben. I'm glad we were not expecting corned beef and sauerkraut. WiFi only worked in one small area at the entrance to the lounge in the lobby area, and it was very slow.

Only thing great about this hotel is the location. The lobby and check in were good. I paid about 50 USD per night and got a dingy room facing the back courtyard. The room is really old and the bathroom had mildew. There is no internet in the rooms, only in the lobby. The shower is horrible with low stream and on the second day it would either give me scalding hot water or cold water in intervals. I wonder if you can ask for newly renovated rooms. I saw people smoking in the hall ways. I think its not worth paying more than $40 US per night. Its close to airport shuttle drop off (3 mins walk), bell tower, drum tower and the muslim street.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated new room with bell tower view.

The property claims to be 4 star and aspires o be 5 star but is probably only 3 star. Bathrooms are small and mouldy (we saw 3). The mattress is very hard. Rooms facing square are quite noisy. Otherwise it is clean and the staff are pleasant and location is excellent.

This hotel has a very good location right in the middle of Xian. Easy access to the city wall(South Gate) and Muslim quarter on foot. There is an underpass to the other side of street so no worries about the traffic. The bathroom is a bit old but if you are only taking a quick shower , it's ok. Select the city view so that you have the Bell Tower right in front of room window.

We used this hotel as a one night stop over before we went on to visit the Terracotta Army . Location very good and small night market just opposite hotel along with over shops. The room was very clean and tidy staff very friendly and helpful. We would use this hotel again

This hotel is centrally located inside the wall of the city, across the street from the beautiful Bell /Drum Tower. We found the public areas of this older hotel beautifully decorated and well taken care of. The breakfast buffet on the second floor featured everything you could ever want and was delicious! The rooms and bathrooms however, were a outdated and could use a remodel. We found the staff friendly, helpful and with spoke adequate English. Overall, we have stayed in much nicer, newer hotels, but this hotel more than met our short term needs.

Room Tip: The breakfast buffet was excellent! Be sure to take in the view of the Bell / Drum Tower outside the...

Let me start by saying I've stayed in much nicer hotels in China, but if your priority is on proximity to local attractions this is a great place to stay. The Bell Tower, Drum Tower, and Muslim street are within minutes a by walking from this location. We were in Xi'an on tour, and staying here allowed us to explore these sights on our own for as long or short of a time as cared.

As other reviewers note, the rooms leave seem something to be desired. The bathrooms had mold/mildew, peeling paint, and we encountered one with a broken toliet. Yes, the non smoking rooms had smoke odors. The rooms with the benefit of the direct view of the Bell Tower also come with the traffic (and honking horns in the wee hours). We managed to sleep through it but light sleepers beware (you may want a room opposite side of the hall).
