We stayed at the Bell Tower Hotel in October 2013 and thought it was just OK. This is a good, central location next to a subway entrance. We were not comfortable enough to walk around after dark though. Our room had been renovated and was pretty nice. There were some very faint traces of cigarette smoke smell, but I suspect that is because Chinese will smoke in a non-smoking room. It was large, well appointed, and clean. Typical of our experience in Beijing, the bed was a platform style arrangement with a thin mattress on it - good for back trouble but a little hard for our taste. We were on the front of the hotel and enjoyed the show, with traffic going through the four-lane roundabout. It was a little noisy but tolerable with the windows closed and the drapes drawn. The food in the restaurant was mediocre at best and poor the rest of the time. They rely heavily on their buffet and the English translations both there and in the menu are pretty funny. A "robin" sandwich was a hot ham and cheese, which the waitress pronounced as Reuben. I'm glad we were not expecting corned beef and sauerkraut. WiFi only worked in one small area at the entrance to the lounge in the lobby area, and it was very slow.
