“Mind the Construction”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2013

Positives: Good location near the city wall, and only took about a twenty minute walk to get to the center bell tower. Clean room, with updated materials. My bed was enormous... like two queen beds pushed together.

Negatives: The breakfast was pretty poor, inclusive of a yogurt that was past its date. As of late March, 2013, there was construction going on around the hotel in three different directions, and it was noisy. It also made it a little dangerous walking around the hotel... more so than the usual pedestrian danger gauntlet that walking in a Chinese city entails.

Also, not that the hotel can control this, but there was a ton of dust in the air from the surrounding mountains during our visit that gave just about everyone in our group a hearty cough. Bring a mask...

Room Tip: Request a room overlooking the wall...

The Grand Park has a lot going for it, especially the location, so close to the city walls, as others have commented. However, that was undermined in our experience by a number of problems. The main one was the attitude of several staff members. Some were clear trying hard, but others - especially the serving staff, like the waitresses - just looked like they'd rather be elsewhere. My girlfriend and I booked a massage for her parents as a treat and the masseuse practically had to be told by her supervisor to lift her head off the table (seemingly trying to sleep) and look after the guests. The waitresses often seemed to be a little glum, for reasons unclear. Similarly, something as simple as booking a taxi proved really difficult - my request the night before seems to have been passed through several staff members until it was forgotten and we ended up just standing on the street hailing a cab with everyone else.

Also, we booked a guided tour to see the Terracotta Army, but it turned out to be more like a quick visit to that famous site sandwiched between multiple forced trips to various local shops where we were encouraged to buy (unwanted and frankly undesirable) products - the final straw was a bizarre 40 minute presentation about silk sheets priced up to RMB 5000 each - in the end we simply walked out. Basically, it all seemed a bit exploitative. When I later mentioned it to a hotel staff member, he replied "Oh, yes, I think I know that guy - we often get complaints about him." Not that this stopped the hotel booking him for our tour, though.

In addition to the poor service, there were two other drawbacks. First, the supposedly stunning view from the hotel to the city walls was spoiled by the area being a construction site (as of March 2013),and with it the constant very loud noise. Second, the breakfast was pretty low grade - the bread was always hard and most cooked food quite greasy. By our fourth morning we couldn't face it and went out to a local restaurant, even though it meant paying twice.

I've seen the other reviews on this site and was surprised how generous they seem. Maybe you'll be luckier than us. But my recommendation is to think twice before booking here.

Negatives:
My husband and I arrived into Xi'an airport at 1am and finding a taxi that knew where the hotel was, was difficult and the hotel is not well lit at all at night didn't help. However, we did get there. The heater/ventilation system was very noisy and the shower took a very long time to become hot. The WiFi was charged, which really isn't good enough. The entire hotel (lobby and rooms) are very poorly lit.
Positives:
Whilst being small, the room was very comfortable and all we needed for two nights. The location is fantastic, only two minutes to the South (main) Gate of the City Walls, ten minute walk to the Drum and Bell Towers and the Small Goose Pagoda. The staff were all very nice and accommodating (except for the concierge who told us it was "too difficult" for us to get to the Terracotta Warriors alone and wanted to sell us a Y1000 round trip driver - the bus we caught without issue was Y18 return each).

Whilst not the most luxurious of hotels around, from what we saw, the price fits the excellent location.

We didn't eat at the hotel so I can't comment on the restaurants/breakfast.

Room Tip: I have no idea

Grand Park Xi'an is located conveniently outside the Yongning Gate of the walled city, and has a metro station just outside its doors. Overall, the hotel rooms could be upgraded, but they were large and comfortable. I was disappointed that there was no wifi in the rooms (as promised when I emailed them in November), as this was one of the reasons I chose the hotel. We were upgraded to a room with a view of the wall as "compensation", but judging by the lack of guests during this off peak time, I think they could have tried a little harder.

The front desk service was very hit and miss, depending on which staff member was serving you. For example, we were told three different things about wifi in the lobby by staff: first that we would have to pay, next that it wasn't working at all, and third that it was free and available to all guests. Answer #2 was correct. Staff were sometimes impatient and unfriendly, but we received great service from a French gentleman, who explained how we could go catch the terracotta warriors bus.

Concierge were unfailingly helpful with our luggage, and always opened the doors for us when entering/leaving the hotel (or asking if we needed a taxi). Special mention also to the cleaning staff member, who did a great job every day and was very friendly every time we chatted to her outside the room.

Overall, the hotel was of solid quality, but I would suggest that front desk staff need to communicate better - both internally and to customers.

After a horrible experience coming from the airport, this hotel was an oasis to us. As there was four of us, we had two metered taxis and were taken on a joy ride, even stopping to fill up the tank with the meter running. The hotel helped us to lodge a complaint, and on the way back made sure we had a pre priced shuttle. The hotel was clean, very ornate in the public area, but plain rooms. Fine by us. Beds were clean, rooms were clean and bathroom spotless. We did not have time for breakfast there, but we did go out for supper at a near by pizza hut. After living in China for four months, I was not adverse to pizza as a change. It was very good, and the restaurant looked like a fine dining room. Very nice. Went to see the Terra cotta warriors and spent the rest of the day tootling around. Too cold to do the bike tour on the City wall, but bikes are available for 40 rmb. Would go back cheerfully to Xi'an as well as Grand Park.

The hotel is right opposite of the City Wall and the Yongning City Gate - The South Gate. Great view of the City Wall at night when all the lights on the wall illuminated. The hotel itself are beautiful and rooms are clean and comfortable. The buffet breakfast was great with quite a variety. Local, Western and Japanese dishes are provided. Friendly and helpful staff and also they have a simple fitness room. Wifi is only available at the cafe at ground floor.

Stayed two nights while touring the Terracotta warriors and the Hua Shan mountains.
Room faced The South Gate and at night we could watch traditional Tai Chi while music played.
Windows could crank out so you could hear the beautiful traditional Chinese music.
You will not hear the music when the window is closed.

Wi-fi not available in the rooms so IPad was useless. It is available in the lobby. At times, I could use it right outside our room because all the rooms exit doors overlook the lobby. Lobby noise oes not carry up to the rooms.

Landline for Internet use is available.

Breakfast was mediocre with not a lot of selection.

We enjoyed ending our day with a nightcap in the beautiful lobby.

Room Tip: Ask to face Xi'an 's South Gate and you can watch Tai Chi and hear music until late evening.
