Sofitel’s Casablanca Moroccan Restaurant offers an oasis of quiet, tranquility, and order that is a welcome respite from the hubbub while of Xian’s busy streets. We sampled the cold mezze as a good option to try a few favorites such as hummus, tabouleh, babaganoush, and olives, all of which were quite up to Middle East standards (lived there 6 years) although the bread consisted of pancake size pita bread which while warmed was dry and lackluster. My wife’s lamb kebabs were deliciously spiced and tender; ditto for my lamb with prunes, which also came with couscous to soak up the sauces. Service was excellent and our water glasses never empty – a great pleasure following a hot day of touring. Their wine menu offers something for everyone and is moderately priced.

Other than the big hotel restaurant, Azur, we had a hard time finding great food in Xi'an. This was my favorite meal in this city. We ordered a selection and tried everything and it was all good! Mostly local Chinese food in Xi'an or typical western hotel food, which was fine, but gets old quickly.

Though I am aware this restaurant is within a major 'quality' hotel, that should not necessarily mean being ripped off with tiny portions of food at exhorbitant prices. I spent 330RMB on a very small 'large' tagine, a small but expensive 'hummus' appetiser (hummus is hardly a costly food, no reason for it to cost 80RMB). Having complained to the head waiter that Moroccan food is about large portions, eating until you're painfully full and more couscous than you can shake a hookah at, he did apologise, thus it gets 2stars rather than 1. But never again.

We were disappointed with our meal at Casablanca. It was easily the least satisfactory meal we have had in the two weeks we have been in China. The food is bland, lacks spice and as a result is very ordinary. You can get a much better meal in the Muslim Quarter for a quarter of the price

The setting and service was excellent and the food Magnoificent. It was the little added touches that helped. The hand washing ritual and the placing of bread and chili salsa, olive oil and blended cauliflower AND endless mint tea on the table helped with the ambience of the place. Well worth a visit and for those who want pure 'halal' Food, this is the place in Xian at the west wing, Sofitel.
