“Dumplings 101. Great for novices - not so much for 'experts'”
Reviewed October 17, 2013

This is something of an 'institution' in Xian and is popular with locals and tourists alike. Very close to the Bell and Drum tower, go for a wander in the surrounding area after your meal to walk off the calories!
Dumplings are a specialty of the Xian area and the second floor of the de fa Chang is the place for a quick introduction to a whole range of them!
The place does serve other food but certainly amongst 'round eyes' is known for dumplings.
It is a bit tired looking and 'well used' but don't let that dissuade you. What is a bit more off-putting is to be channeled into a side area with a lot of package tour groups which undermines the 'exoticness' if that's what your after - on the other hand if you are a novice and wary of food too far out there it is a safe place to start - a bit like cask wine!
Basically you can go for a fixed price menu which has a few cold starters about eight different types of dumplings plus a few sweet ones and some fruit for Y128. Service is of the quick industrial sort and they can tend to rush you through things at warp speed.
The cold dishes were the heroes in my opinion but the dumplings were all reasonable to good - don't let them go cold. A couple like the duck and vegetable are little works of art. Make sure you ask for the sweet walnut shaped ones which are tasty and not often seen elsewhere.

We were looking forward to eating at this famous place in Xian, but it did not meet our expectations. First, the place needs a nice face lift in and out....it is very old, and not in good condition (i.e. carpets, bathrooms, etc.) Its a big noisy place, but we were placed in a private room-the window was open (90 degrees outside..) and no one bothered to turn on the AC....the waitresses seemed like they couldn't care less...I finally found the right knob to push, and the AC started. later when the waitress came in, she did close the windows, (which was tricky, as there is a screen blocking the windows....) Anyway, then came the food. Its a big hit or miss, as they bring you a huge selection of dumplings, with a variety of fillings.....non were really memorable, and we had much better dumplings in Beijing. It is very possible that in the 'smaller' towns (only 8.5 million in Xian....) they are not in par with the big cities, Beijing and Shanghai, as is common in many other countries, were the big cities offer more, in most cases.....the mini dumpling soup was delicious, but not that welcomed on such a hot day..... Although we were only two, our guide got us the Dumpling Banquet....so there was plenty to choose from, but once we started tasting them, the number of good ones decreased....

“Below (our very high) expectations”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

My son's favourite food are dumplings, so this "dumpling-only" dinner was his highlight. A lot of different types, but we have had much better dumplings in other restaurants around. Cold atmosphere. No English (compensated by a lot of smiles) by the dedicated waitress in the dedicated anonymous room.

“a great way to taste the dumplings of Xi'an”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

We visited this restaurant based on local recommendations and as many of the other reviewers had the dumpling banquet which gives you a variety a different types of dumplings. We had some trouble finding this on the menu as it wasn't offered on the english version but with some simple english phrases we were able to be understood and ordered it. It was delicious and not anything that we have had before. The bonus is that when we came out of this restaurant it was dark and the view of the bell and drum tower was even more amazing.

“nice experience”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

I was there on a business trip and we had the dumpling banquet, meaning we sample I don't know how many different kinds of dumplings, savory one, sweet ones, spicy ones... It was very interesting and most of them tasted great. The place was rather crowded and noisy, waitresses very busy but efficient. You shouldn't miss going here to taste Sichuan dumplings, especially if you're a party of several people : you can order the banquet and taste a bit of everything witjout getting too full (otherwise, you're probably completetly stuffed before the end)
