We were looking forward to eating at this famous place in Xian, but it did not meet our expectations. First, the place needs a nice face lift in and out....it is very old, and not in good condition (i.e. carpets, bathrooms, etc.) Its a big noisy place, but we were placed in a private room-the window was open (90 degrees outside..) and no one bothered to turn on the AC....the waitresses seemed like they couldn't care less...I finally found the right knob to push, and the AC started. later when the waitress came in, she did close the windows, (which was tricky, as there is a screen blocking the windows....) Anyway, then came the food. Its a big hit or miss, as they bring you a huge selection of dumplings, with a variety of fillings.....non were really memorable, and we had much better dumplings in Beijing. It is very possible that in the 'smaller' towns (only 8.5 million in Xian....) they are not in par with the big cities, Beijing and Shanghai, as is common in many other countries, were the big cities offer more, in most cases.....the mini dumpling soup was delicious, but not that welcomed on such a hot day..... Although we were only two, our guide got us the Dumpling Banquet....so there was plenty to choose from, but once we started tasting them, the number of good ones decreased....

“Below (our very high) expectations”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

My son's favourite food are dumplings, so this "dumpling-only" dinner was his highlight. A lot of different types, but we have had much better dumplings in other restaurants around. Cold atmosphere. No English (compensated by a lot of smiles) by the dedicated waitress in the dedicated anonymous room.

“a great way to taste the dumplings of Xi'an”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

We visited this restaurant based on local recommendations and as many of the other reviewers had the dumpling banquet which gives you a variety a different types of dumplings. We had some trouble finding this on the menu as it wasn't offered on the english version but with some simple english phrases we were able to be understood and ordered it. It was delicious and not anything that we have had before. The bonus is that when we came out of this restaurant it was dark and the view of the bell and drum tower was even more amazing.

“nice experience”
Reviewed September 20, 2013

I was there on a business trip and we had the dumpling banquet, meaning we sample I don't know how many different kinds of dumplings, savory one, sweet ones, spicy ones... It was very interesting and most of them tasted great. The place was rather crowded and noisy, waitresses very busy but efficient. You shouldn't miss going here to taste Sichuan dumplings, especially if you're a party of several people : you can order the banquet and taste a bit of everything witjout getting too full (otherwise, you're probably completetly stuffed before the end)

“Good Fun in Xi'an”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

If you are on vacation in Xi'an and want to have some fun, go to De Fa Chang with a group of friends and get the dumpling banquet. It is not an authentic, street food, Michelin star rated experience. If that's what you want you should be eating on the street in the Muslim Quarter or going somewhere more expensive.

I went to De Fa Chang with 2 friends and we ordered the smallest dumpling dinner banquet and a few beers. A tray of cold vegetable salads was included, they tasted fine, also included was a sweet and sour soup with wontons and the final soup with tiny lucky dumplings. The special dumplings don't taste like much but it is great fun to watch them get dropped on our table one after the other. The waitress spoke enough english and did a good jump of explaining the dumplings to us.

Everyone who said the generic dumplings taste best is correct. They were by far the freshest dumplings and tasted like typical pork and cabbage steamed dumplings like my uncle makes at home. The meal comes with a big bowl of the generic dumplings so we were stuffed by the end of the meal.

I went at 7pm on a Tuesday night and got a seat upstairs no problem. I wanted to sit by the window but those tables were already full. The waitress was typically gruff but she battled through her english like a soldier. The best part was watching the waitresses fight over table territory.

Consider these dumplings like fondant cake: fondant tastes like crap, yet people still get them for their special occasions. That's the case with the special dumplings here. Where else are you going to get dumplings in the shape of ducks and walnuts and pinwheels for 22 USD? Just get the smallest banquet, if you are still hungry go prowl the the Muslim Quarter for snacks to finish you off.
