Reviewed April 7, 2013 via mobile

Great atmospheric hostel with covered courtyard restaurant and nice comfortable rooms.
Bathrooms are basic and slightly mouldy, shower pressure is bad but probably because bathroom is a wet room.
beds are okay and decor is nice. Food is reasonable but not great in the restaurant, they offer a lot of western choices that are tasty enough if you like American standard food. Would stay again just for the atmosphere and location. Its a bit of a hike to the train station if you are going to the warriors catch the 603 bus from the main intersection outside the south gate or get a taxi in this crazy busy town of xian.

Most hotel/hostel rooms have either good location, or cheap rooms or good service. Seldom do we get a combination of all of these. I am glad to have one that fulfilled all these criteria in XiangZiMen (XZM). Right from the start, we were picked up free from the train station to the hostel for free by a staff member Mia. Although it was a little delayed due to heavy traffic conditions, Mia was more than willing to assist us in any ways.

When we reached and checked in, we were surprised by the Chinese layout of the rooms. (200 yuan deposit per room) They were clean and even came with the usual three pin plugs you get in UK/Singapore. At about S$14 per person per night, it was a decent and affordable stay given the spacious rooms. Take note though, if your rooms do not come with a toilet, the showers are located on the third level with shower partitions and curtains (at least for the guys)

The hostel is conveniently located a few bus stops away from the train station, where we travelled to the Terracota Warriors. From the airport, the airport shuttle bus drops you off at Melody Hotel and it is a 10 mins walk to the hostel. It is also a few minutes walk to YongNing Metro Station, where you can travel to Xian North Metro Station and take the train to Hua Mountain North Train Station. It is also walkable to the South Gate; Drum and Bell Towers. Near the Drum Tower is also the Muslim Quarters, so really, it was pretty convenient to travel around with XZM as the centre.

Mia was absolutely great. She provided us with various location tips and showed us how to go there. Because she remembered us from the pickup, it was easier for her to explain to her fellow colleagues when something went wrong (fellow travelmate left his slipper in another room etc) She even went the extra mile to help us purchase train tickets before us paying her back. For non-Mandarin speakers, you will find Mia a refreshing change as she is able to converse fluently in English.

All in all, with the various tourist friendly attractions and great accommodation coupled with friendly staff, my Xi An trip was well worth a trip and I strongly recommend people to stay at XZM while staying at Xi An.

One tip for the airport shuttle bus service: Gathered around the location at Melody Hotel are some car drivers who will ask you for your departure time and then say that you will be late if you take the shuttle service. Instead they can bring you there at a faster time for the same price. My advice is to refuse politely and ignore them. The service is well established and takes about an hour to reach the airport at a standard price of 26 yuan. They arrive very frequently at 20 minutes starting at 8 am. These people are merely playing to your anxiety and they will probably jack up the price before driving you to the airport. So just stay calm and line up orderly :)

A great location and wonderful staff. Our stay while in xian was wonderful. This hostel has great appeal and a lovely old school feel. The double rooms rooms with ensuite are neat and clean - try to get one at back of hotel with a window as quieter there. We had room 306. The grounds are always kept tidy, staff are very attentive- and so nice! Massages are amazing, close to all great things - entrance of south wall entrance, close to street food- and shopping. The hostel arranged any necessary tours for us - to the warriors, helpful on directions. Overall our stay was wonderful. We had brought a little koala with us so when we had found someone lovely, we could give to them - the reception staff were so happy and surprised when we did give this to them. Great value hostel and YHA accredited.

I spent two nights in the Hostel and it was one of the best places that I stayed in during my 21 day trip throughout China. The atmosphere is really great, it makes you feel very comfortable. the staff are friendly and the rooms were large and the beds comfortable. The showers were also large and spa-like. The only downside was that there was smoking allowed in the restaurant and this made it very stuffy in the lobby and seating areas, which is a shame because it is a very cozy place to hang out in otherwise. There are also free computers with internet access, which is a plus for me while travelling. I would recommend staying here to others travelling to Xi'an.

Room Tip: The rooms in the basement level are nice, but they don't have windows and can be a bit stuffy...

I spent 3 nights in the xiangzimen and found it to be very good value for money. Had a private en suite room to myself. Very good size and nice view if the south gate from the window. Was more like a hotel than a hostel really as staff came in to clean bathroom, change towels and make bed every day. Staff and service was excellent and location was excellent, very easy to find and get about the city. The only one major downside of this hostel for me though was the smoking. I know smoking in public restaurants etc is accepted in china, but sitting in the bar area which is the only one real area with decent wifi access in the hostel, the smell of smoke as overwhelming and really quite disgusting, the room also smelt of smoke. Change your smoking rules xiangzimen and I'd give you an extra star.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a window, seems a lot of their rooms are windowless.

Quite simply, probably the best hostel I've ever stayed in. Big comfy dorm bed, all the facilities and very cheap to boot. The restaurant food isn't great but a great place to sit and pass the time. And the staff are very helpful. I had a great time.

We stayed in a private twin here (perhaps dorms are better value) and felt it was a bit over priced for the room. The bathroom was really smelly and dirty looking and the windows were drafty and couldn't be opened. It was also really noisy in our room all night but I think parts of the hostel are quieter (it's huge).
The social area was really nice and the food is pretty good- Expensive though and so is the beer!
Maybe it was the wrong time of year but it wasn't 'lively and loud' as expected from reviews.
The staff were friendly but could have been smilier.
Overall was an average stay.
