“Beware of the food”
Reviewed March 23, 2012

We did not stay at this hotel, fortunately. But we did eat at the restaurant, and that was a disaster. The only occasion we had food poisoning while we travelled in China.

First impressions count, and I have to say I thought this looked a little more than run down. It is a long time since a good maintenance programme was carried out here. Toilets were little better than the general public toilets - in fact many of them were better.

Lunch was the only meal we had here, and the food was of reasonable quantity and the vegetables seemed to be fresh. But the meats were a concern. Sure enough, 6 hours later 3/4 of our tour was sitting it out in the loo. And it was a serious case requiring antibiotics for at least 4 of the group.

Guilin offers an abundant array of great food places, just make sure you dont choose this one.

Our experience here was the same as the several other 3 star hotels we'd stayed at in China. It was more than adequate for our needs but does indeed seem oldish and in need of modernisation. The reception was a large spacious area. We found the reception staff to be welcoming and friendly and spoke English. The rooms were clean and had the necessary things! We had a room on the front with a lovely view over the river. Breakfast catered much more to our western tastes that any of the other 3 star hotels where we'd stayed. There wasn't really anywhere to sit and have a beer - other than the breakfast area which was very unwelcoming in the evening. The hotel is very central and it is easy to walk from there into the town. We were also able to walk to the station from the hotel (15 mins) for our overnight train to Shenzhen and Hong Kong. We enjoyed our stay but might just try something else next time.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the river and the karst hills is really very pleasant.

The Osmanthus Hotel is an older, slightly tatty 12 storey, 370 room building in a favourable central location, with pleasant staff. Odd-numbered rooms overlook Peach Blossom River, a tributary of the famous Li River. Rooms are standard-size but cosy, with tea making facilities. (If you prefer coffee you would be well advised to bring a jar with you to China). There is an outdoor swimming pool on the 3rd floor, and a foot & body massage centre on the ground floor. Dinner is served in the Chinese restaurant on the ground floor, and a copious Western breakfast with fruit, oat porridge and eggs cooked to order is served on the 2nd floor between 7.00am and 10.00 am.

For the city centre, turn right out of the hotel then turn left over the bridge on to busy Zhongshan Road with its double-decker buses, everyday shops and fast-food outlets. After ten minutes you’ll reach tree-lined Rong Hu Lake to the left and Shan Hu Lake with its twin 40 metre pagodas to the right. In the evening a night market of trashy souvenirs takes place on this street. Nearby pedestrian-only Zhenyang and Yiren Lu streets are more enticing, with outdoor bars where you can relax and people watch. For alternate exploration, instead of crossing the bridge continue walking along Blossom River until you reach Elephant Trunk Hill.

Room Tip: Odd numbered rooms overlook Peach Blossom River

We stayed at this Hotel for 2 different nights. The rooms smell of dampness, furniture old & shabby, bathroom dirty, Breastfast was Ok but food was cold as the lids of the buffet dishes were opened. Horrible reconstitued juice. They charged 5 yuen for each bag per day stored at their Hotel as we were going to Longsheng & didn't want to drag all our bags along. Internet is not free. On the morning of our second night, we were rushing to the airport, the reception at the front desk demanded us to pay 20 Yuan for the coffee which they stated that the packet was opened. We arrived at he Hotel late the night before & had to leave early the next morning. We never touch the coffee pack. I did noticed that the coffee pack, stored on top of the shelf above the electric kettle, was wrinkled when we first checked in. Our tour guide asked them to check with the cleaner again to make sure that it was our room they found the opened coffee packet. However they took a long time & said they couldn't find her. As we were rushing to the airport & unable to wait, our tour guide pay them 20 Yuen. We were embarrassed about the incident as the accusation is bad with no witness. We gave over 400 yuen tips to our good tour guide & over 200 yuen to our driver, so 20 yuen is peanut. We had such a bad experience with this Osmanthus Hotel that it spoilt our trip. We'll never stay at this Hotel again.

The Osmanthus is an old hotel that has seen its glory days pass. Lobby is fine, but the rooms and corridors look very old.
The room was fine for 2 beds and an extra bed. The ceiling was high enough to avoid feeling trapped. Only negative point was the carpet, which looked way too much used.
Bathrooms had old appliances, according to the age of the hotel, but everything looked clean, and the towels and bed sheets looked in good shape.
Breakfast was just fine, nothing special.
Location depends on what you're doing in Guilin. Osmanthus is located some 20 mins walking from the central 2 pagodas lake and the Central Square. We booked it through a travel agent during an organized section of our travel to China, but next time in Guilin we'll choose a hotel closer to the city center.
Internet access only using their computers on the business center.

Some attempts had been made to update our room with new carpet, wallpaper, curtins, bathroom etc. but they kept the old dark stained and worn furniture which made the room look more shabby than it really was. The area around the hotel seemed a bit seedy so you'd need to be careful at night. Our breakfast was good and they offered a free complimentary drink to our tour group. There were internet facilities in the room (although we didn't try them as they had to be organised through the front desk) but we purchased a half hour in the business centre where a staff member set the internet up for operating in english. On the negative side, the lifts were slow, no free water in the room, no tissues and only one power outlet that could be used for re-charging batteries for cameras, shavers, toothbrushes, etc. There was a pool but it was closed.

The whole hotel smells of damp. Spent 2 nights here. Very basic. Breakfast - no buffet. Bacon and eggs served standard to everyone. Horrible reconstituted orange juice. Room overlooked the river and town. Walking distance to night market and shops. Entrance area and reception decidedly seedy, and massage parlour in basement even more so! Internet access in room next to Reception. Good value (£1 an hour) but difficult getting anyone interested in switching the computer on for me. Connection slow. Outdoor pool closed.
