Stayed hear recently on a tour of China, great views of the Li River if you are lucky enough to get a river view room great watching the traffic from room you will get a good laugh and be amazed at the locals crossing the road. Lovely walk along the river and on the other side are to be had. Nice lightning at night makes it even more enjoyable, standard breakfast like most hotels in China.

This hotel is located by the beautiful Li River, and the downtown of Guilin, only 3 minutes walk from the walk street. if staying at this hotel, you can walk along Li River or around the downtown in the evening. The breakfast is also quite excellent with rich varieties for choose. Most of all, after being upgraded recently, it is of 4-star standard service at a 3-star price.
If you travel to Guilin, Universal will be a good choice.

Room Tip: You can choose a river-view room where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery here. If you are a family with a child, it can also provide a family room including a double bed and a single room for your child.

This was one of the better hotels on our recent Wendy Wu tour of China First the location is great. You are right on river front and within walking distance of the two pagodas/lakes and also elephant trunk hill. If you want to shop you are very close to the pedestranised area. Like most hotels we encountered the lobby is quite small but there is free wifi and a small bar area where the girls are lovely and obliging Be warned though the red wine is served chilled - not a problem for me but some were taken aback Breakfast on a par with that we had elsewhere and breakfast room is nicely positioned affording a view of the street life and scenery . Rooms were good - above average size and on both occasions we had a good view thanks to position and large windows over the river and the distant scenery. Interestingly there is a window between the bathroom and the bedroom -I've had this experience elsewhere in the world but some found it a bit weird.... (maybe cos they only realised this after they had sat on the loo!!!!)

Room Tip: ask for river view

The Universal's position overlooking the river and backing on to the main shopping area is excellent. There are plenty of eating places within a short walk. The buffet breakfasts give plenty for the western tourists to go at. The staff were both friendly and helpful - particularly the room maid. Room and bathroom both of a good size, clean and with all mod-cons.

Room Tip: Ask for a room over-looking the river otherwise you'll get the local housing blocks as neighbours - though these can be interesting!

The hotel itself was okay. Guilin is a nice town and the hotel is in a good position right on the river. Can easily walk from this hotel to the shops and markets nearby. The carpets in this hotel were disgusting and need to be replaced. I was not expecting much on our Wendy Wu tour but at this place I felt the need to have shoes on to walk around the room. The rest of the room was clean and the beds were of course very hard. No problem with cigarette smoke or musty smells etc. The breakfast buffet was pretty good. Wifi in lobby was hit and miss.

Room Tip: ask for clean carpets
