The Sheraton Guilin Hotel was probably better than most Sheraton's I've stayed at in the US. It felt new, spacious, and clean. The hotel staff was courteous, but were sometimes confused/confusing. For example, they swore that we would have a queen bed (even when giving us the room key), but we ended up with two twin beds. When we asked why we did not have a queen, they said they only had twins available.
They have free wireless in the central lobby, but not in the rooms. They do give two free (smallish) bottles of water per day, and offer additional bottles of water for sale in the room. The water is cheaper in the hotel store, and much cheaper in the stores outside the hotel.
The breakfast is great, a combination of eastern and western cuisines in a buffet style. They have a pool, although it is smallish, and an exercise room. The exercise room and pool are only manned certain hours, but the front desk will open them early if you would like. Typical setup with treadmills, bikes, and an elliptical machine inside. The pool is outdoors.
They will exchange traveler's checks, but their commission strangely increases greatly with the amount exchanged. It's 0.75% per $100, so $0.75 for $100, $3 for $200, $6.75 for $300, etc. I can't explain why the commission does this, but they insisted it was correct.
The location really is in the center of the small town it's in. There are nightly 1-hour tourist cruises departing from just down the road and small night market on the same street.
