One of the more average places I've been in China, the village is just like any other touristy town, some old buildings, new buildings made to look like old ones and many many people trying to sell you tat. The river was ruined by all the boats constantly coming in and out, ruining what could've been a beautiful natural view. My point of view was probably also ruined by the typical English weather.

The rest of the town is a building site, with nothing to see.

We planned a trip to Yangshuo and ended up staying in XingPing. While this isn't what we planned, we are so happy it worked out this way. XingPing is small and easily walkable. It is near the bamboo raft rides and has gorgeous views along the river. There are also several good restaurants to enjoy. By comparison, Yangshuo is larger, more touristy (has several German bars, "nice" girls, and KTV), and not as quaint.

We arrived by raft from Yangdi - the scenery is utterly amazing. It is an old town, not really very touristy but suspect this will change when the railway comes. Spent a pleasant hour or two in a charming old "pub"/ off a temple courtyard. Bus back to Yangshuo.

Try to get here for Market day. Full of colour and local atmosphere.

Old street is the core of the tourist area but also the most traditional. A stroll along it will bring you down to the river where the action is. Lots of tourists waiting to take boat trips on the Li River and lots of motorised rafts ready to take you too.

Hiring a motorised raft is good fun. They take four people each and will charge 50 yuan per person extra if only two of you take the raft.

Explore this area fully. We took several trips along the rivers and tributaries, arriving by taxi(very cheap), taking the bamboo crafts and then hiring bikes back to the hotel.
