We had a great time in Guilin by staying in this hostel.
Like the previous post said, the wifi was not working, but later it did work (they sent someone to fix it).
We stayed in a budget double room and it was very nice. Quite a big room and the bathroom was very clean. We also saw the bigger deluxe rooms, they are for more comfort and space.
Airconditioning worked fine, even with the lights off.
We had no problems with noise, at least not as many as in other parts of china.

They serve good breakfast and if you pay attention not expensive at all, you can have 4x toast with jam and fried egg plus full glas of juice for 20 yuan, try to get that at any western restaurant, it will be the same price or higher (and yes an extra coffee is (relatively) expensive, but that is the case in whole of china).
Speaking about coffee, they have just installed an italian espresso machine. We have tasted a cafe americano and cappucino, both were the best we've tasted so far in china. Real beans, no powder coffee. If you want some good coffee, go here.
Besides that they've got a selection of freshly made juice.

The staff was helpful in arranging tours and information for us, they also have discounts on park entrances inside guilin (example: solitary beauty peak = 130 yuan, they had it for 100). They spoke english pretty well and we got everything we need.

Room Tip: If you dont need extra space, try take the budget double instead of the deluxe, its cheaper.

First, we arranged for an airport pickup via email, but rang just to confirm. We were assured all was good. No one turned up at the airport, we waited 30 minutes before making our own way. Which turned out for the best as it was easy and ALOT cheaper than the hostels price. We arrived at 11:45pm. No one there but the rudest receptionist on Earth. I even laughed, she was so rude. We walked to our room in utter disbelief, so rude we even forgot to mention the pickup didn't turn up.

Internet was broken, we let them know straight away as we needed it to make plans but the receptionist who spoke very little English just barked 'BROKEN' at us. The next day another receptionist was working (phew) so I asked him. He said he knew nothing about it and said he would speak to a man to get it fixed. 20 minutes later I heard him give the same line to another westerner, and pretended to know nothing about it again. We almost checked out but they wouldn't refund us for the days we had already paid for.

The rooms are also hilariously bad. A unit in the corner controls all the lights and power. You can't turn off the light without turning off the power, so if you plan to charge your phone or ipad overnight then think again, unless you sleep with the light on (this also applies to air con)! A work around is unscrewing the bulb. The lights go dim if you turn on the kettle, and the air con stops blowing. The room smells of mould.

The cafe/bar area is expensive compared to other hostels in china and the food isn't as good quality. None of the staff speak good enough English to be of any help at all. One of the bar staff was asleep on the sofa at 11:30 am when I went for breakfast who was supposed to be serving behind the bar. Drinks prices are expensive.

Another annoyance is EVERYDAY that we stayed there on the fifth floor, the key card stopped working, which meant a long hot sweaty walk down 5 flights of stairs to get them to fix it. Also don't plan on sleeping in, the cleaners will be there at 7am shouting from one end of the corridor to the other.

The only reason I didn't give them 1 star is I'm sure Ill stay in worse places than this on my world tour. And one of the less insane receptionists give me some free washing powder. The location is also quite good. The rudeness was also so rude it had become quite funny which provided much hilarity whilst in Guilin.

Room Tip: Ask for a lobotomy to make this hostel more tolerable. Guilin is hot and the fifth floor can be a sw...

Dear, thanks for u kindly reviews. We are sorry to left u uncomfortable feeling while our were staying in our hostel. As the problems your mentioned, we would like to give your some advice .About the kettle and key card problem, u can ask our staff to help u to solve the problem. The staff may be looks like not that kind of easy-going, but they are really nice and kind person. You can ask them any questions and they will try their best to help u .As your know, nobody can keep smile all day, all person have some sad or un-concentrating times. Hope u can understand our staff’s mistake. But I do promise u, we will do more and more training to our staff and make them better and better. The price of our drinking/food are cheaper than the other bars in Guilin. We don’t know why u still feel expensive .We suggest u to feel more different bars ‘s drinks and food in Guilin then u will know how good the price of our hostel .We are sincerely sorry to waste your time on the airport. We had already sent our car to pick u up on the airport ,but the car was broken on the way. We tried to contact u, but it didn’t work. The cleaners are starting work at 8 am everyday in the morning. This is a normal working time in China. For make u feel noise,we only can apologize for it. Due to the humid weather of Guilin, you can open the air-condition to make the room smell better. We have already remove the pool table and add 1 more cleaner to clean the toilet. Now u can enjoy the table-tennis without feeling the smell of toilet.Ming Palace Team.

Cookie(receptionist) was very rude. we had to wait three hours for our room and when we got there it still wasn't ready. Three of the four toilets we knew about were blocked. The room was dirty. The lock on our dorm was broken. We had paid for a 6 bed female dorm, we were put in a 10 bed mixed dorm and weren't even asked if it was okay, we only found out when we went to the room. We didn't even end up staying, we changed hostel to green forest hostel which is amazing and the staff, especially happy, have been great. I definitely wouldn't recommend this hostel if you want to stay in a dorm. My friend and I have stayed in many hostels in China and this has by far been the worst.

ear Steph B,

Thank you very much for your feedback. To cope with the crush of mass tourism during the May Day holiday, we hired some fresh hands, Cookie is one of them. It’s our negligence not to give our new employees enough pre-service training. We sincerely apologize for all of the inconvenient has been caused to you, hope that the beautiful scenery of Guilin had wiped out your unpleasant experience at our hostel.
On receive your feedback, we had called up meeting and punished all relevant personnel. They will receive stricter training and do a better job from now on. We hope that you could give us a second chance if you ever come back to Guilin, we assured you will enjoy our hostel as much as other travelers do. And, those who are coming to Guilin, our hostel is always open to you! –Team Ming Palace

We found the quality of hostel accommodation in China to be really high and this place was no exception. Friendly staff, clean, a cool communal area with pool table and movie / DVD area (we watched Apocalypto, Inception and Toy Story 2 during our few nights stay. You can graffiti a message onto the walls to record your stay.

We forked out a bit more for a private double room but must've arrived at the right time because we were upgraded to a better room. It was very large, well furnished and had a good view onto the street. The en suite was long and narrow so felt a bit small, but it had hot water and was quite acceptable for a few days.

There is a restaurant in the hostel which sells decent, well priced and tasty food. Our only problem was that one night we were told no Chinese food was available (in China!). We ordered a pizza instead and it seemed to arrive in a takeaway box before being taken to the kitchen and appearing in front of us on a plate. We would have been better off getting it ourselves.

All in all, this is a good hostel and we would consider staying here again should we return to Guilin.

I stayed in a private room, which was really nice and big! The bed was great! Very thick mattress! I had a very good night of sleep! Airconditioning was working well. The bathroom was very good as well, very spacious, and a good shower, and western toilet! Everything was very clean! I was not annoyed at all by the street noice. I heard almost nothing at night!!!! In the morning there were some cars passing by and people talking, but it's not a main road, and it can be lots and lots noisier in Asia! The location is very good!! Close to the centre, to restaurants, shops.. The train station is a bit far to walk, you better use a taxi or public transport. The bar downstairs is nice and cosy, a good place to meet other travellers, or just have a drink or some foods. The staff was very friendly and helpfull when I was there (october 2011)

Just had a stay here in one of the deluxe rooms. Room was large and clean and tastefully decorated. Shower was hot and decent pressure. I loved that our bed had an electric matress so it was nice and warm when we got in bed! Tv had one English channel so this was a plus. Staff helpfulness was intermittent, it was great that they translated what you needed into chinese to book tickets etc but then sometimes it seemed like they couldn't be bothered to help at all, such as booking taxi's.
The thing I hated about this place was that there was a communal hair drier on each floor which you couldn't take into your room, which meant some inconsiderate people would use it gone midnight!!!!!!

hostel is in good location near sights and pedestrian street and the river, but a lot of street noise and right next to a school full of screaming kids.
