travelling in china is not that easy because of language and different culture. so it is very important that you stay in a good hotel. so we choose shangri-la.... people are very pleasant and always willing to help. rooms are great and complete with the things you need. the beds and pillows are very comfortable. and the food in the coffee shop is very good, good variety and reasonably priced and you know it has its standards on quality and cleanliness. shang palace restaurant is also good and price reasonable and nice and quite to eat.

We admit to being biased. Shangri=La is our favorite hotel chain in Asia and we stay in their properties whenever we can afford to. Fortunately for us, the Guilin Shangri-La is recently opened and the promotional rates were manageable.
The staff was excellent from check in to check out - two nights total. The amenities and ambiance were first rate. The breakfast buffet was superb. We did not notice any of the cleanliness or comfort issues raised in a previous review. Every aspect of our experience met or exceeded our expectations.
We booked a Li River excursion through the concierge desk and found it to be the best tour on our China holiday. If you do likewise, we suggest you request tourguide Jiang (Cindy). She is a delightful, effervescent tourguide with good English skills who made sure we saw all the beautiful formations on our excursion.
We hope to return again with other family members to this beautiful region and wonderful hotel. Hopefully, the rates will remain competitive.

The lobby was impressive; very open and massive. Initially upon check-in we were greeted warmly by all staff.

The room was clean and well kept. The carpet looked like it was recently used but they made attempts to keep it clean. You could see some crammed dust along the baseboards and corners along the bathroom were yellow. Towels were clean along with the bedding.

Also, the rooms excelled on keeping noise out from other noisy patrons, you often hear while staying in hotels.

The beds for sleeping in were average, but you could tell that there was some wear on the mattress as there were hard and soft spots.

Further, the hotel breakfast buffet was above-average: western, chinese, mediterranean, french, japanese, etc, combined with a fresh noodle/ soup station, and full service egg station. The choices were endless and good quality for eating.

Wifi was provided complimentary to hotel guests only in the lobby. Broadband and wireless were available in the rooms for a fee.

One complimentary bottle of water was provided to each hotel guest as well as slippers.

The only things that should be noted are: a) lobby often contained smoke from smokers in the open coffee lounge b) rooms were clean but the desks/ tables often felt dusty c) room lighting is somewhat dim even after all lights were turned on.

I would recommend this hotel to others should they want to stay in Guilin. However, it is not a four-star hotel by north american standards... I would say it is comparably a 3.5star hotel.

We stayed in this hotel in May 2010 and were extremely happy with it. Beautiful grounds and rooms, staff was extremely freindly and tried their best to talk to us. This is a luxury hotel and goes beyond even for American standards.
Their buffet was amazing!! We used their laundry services and internet lounge very often. Also, they have bothe Chinese and Western food. Their location is not exactly downtown but it is just a taxi ride away that will cost you 15 RMB ( less than $2).
We had a riverview room and it was just unbelievable to wake up to that every morning.
Guilin is beautiful and this hotel made it mucher better!!
I would definetly reccommend this hotel for anyone that likes comfort and amenities after a long day of touring Gulin.

Friends had stayed in Guilin a year or so ago and were reluctant to recommend somewhere to stay as nothing was that great in terms of international standards.

The Shangri-la will fill that gap. We were there during the soft opening so had a few issues - some building noise and no pool or changing rooms from the gym.

However we expected that and we feel confident this will be sorted out.

The food was good but the restaurant very noisy and busy - so not a great choice for a quiet meal. We felt that the photos on the web site were a bit flattering - you did not have that view - maybe one room did but we didn't find it!

The rooms were comfortable and spacious but the lighting could have been a bit more subtle.

It was a little out of town but there were no problems in getting a taxi. And we were able to get a local taxi (arranged by the concierge) to take us and wait for us when we visted the Reed Flute Caves. Much cheaper than a hotel car.

There was a pool table in the bar which we enjoyed.

The front desk staff helped us when our flight was cancelled which would have been very hard to sort out ourselves given that Opodo helpfully said we should phone them in the UK from China. The hotel managed to book us onto an alternative flight the same day.

Overall I would recommend the Shangri-la for a stay in Guilin. We did look at the alternatives when we were in town such as the Sheraton - which frankly looked awful!

I stayed here for 2 nights in "Riverview King Room". These rooms are on 3rd floor with huge balcony (as wide as room and about 15meter deep (see photo). Although 1 month open and still some area's not finished for construction (6th floor, and outside swimmingpool not Operational yet), I loved to stay here from the check-in, the room with soft bed, spacy bathroom with separate bathtub and showercabine and delicious and wide assorted breakfast. And Not to forget the experience of really engaged staf to make it as pleasant as they can bring it for you. The breakfast was really wide assortiment. All in All an excellent Hotel.

I recently booked 2 rooms for 2 nights with my husband and 23 year old son. It was wonderful, I can't say enough about it. It had only been open for 1 month, when we arrived, so we got a special introductory offer, with breakfast included. The buffet was outstanding, the best breakfast I've had in China. The dinner buffet was also excellent, with more choices than I would have imagined. Since the hotel was so new, the outdoor and indoor pools and the spa were not opened yet., although they looked beautiful. The gym was huge, with top of the line equipment. The business center offered free internet service, as I did not have a laptop. All staff were completely attentive, excellent service. My one complaint is that smoking is allowed in the common areas, and it did ruin the atmosphere of an otherwise gorgeous lobby. Also, there are some residential buildings on one side of the hotel, but bamboo is planted, which should offer more privacy.
