“Great value hostel with fantastic staff”
Reviewed March 14, 2010

Fantastic value hostel with some of the most friendly and helpful staff I've ever met who are happy to assist with tours, hires, directions and more. Great atmosphere and all the amenities you'd want from a decent standard hostel. Attracts travellers from all over the world. Would definitely recommend

The Wada was our hostel for the three nights we stayed in Guilin. We arrived after a long day with heavy backpacks and was greeted by a surly, rude young guy who demanded payment for the full stay before he would show us the room. The hostel looks like an old small block of flats that has been tarted up- we stayed on the second floor in a reasonable room- the cons of the room were; hot water was specifically available between certain times (i think it was 6pm-11am), wifi didn't reach our room, the t.v. plug didn't stretch to the socket and the t.v. was fixed to the floor unit(!) and the mattresses were true chinese style- rock hard! The positives were that it was clean and we did have a secure place to leave our luggage. At the time, the guys that were running the place (3-4 student-aged) had a puppy which was very cute but took a liking to the residents by nipping their legs/hands!- i imagine this may have now changed with it being older). With exception to the miserable guy on the front desk the rest of the staff were actually friendly- they liked to hang around the bar and make conversation- a pool table and dvd viewing area was accessible but became annoying to venture out to due to the large volume of mozzies hoovering about (open bar area). The information we obtained from the front desk was limited- they didn't really know much information about excursions, places of interest or local attractions but i think this is probably due to the fact it had just opened at the time of visiting. There are very few interesting things to go and see in the immediate vicinity- and definitely don't take the front-desk girl up on her suggestion of having dinner at the shopping centre over the road!!- we now know no white tourists ventured in there, and we were stared and pointed at throughout our entire meal..not a dining place for westerners!! Our breakfast was always quite an amusing time of day- they have an american and a swiss (?!) option- we had the swiss option which included toast, a frozen kraft cheese slice, a fried egg and marie rose sauce with an orange juice (that took on average 30-45mins to arrive!). They do offer the free use of their bikes (at the time- one bike (the good one!) had been stolen, the second had no working brakes and the third a bent wheel frame!- the guy confessed he wouldn't advise riding any of them if he was us either!). Overall, perfectly fine but teething problems as a new business.
