“Great value.”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

I stayed here for 4 nights after arriving in China. I had a single ensuite room. It was compact, spotlessly clean and had a terrific, powerful shower. It was also cleaned every day and my towel was changed.
Staff are friendly. Some speak English, some don't. I really don't have an issue with this as most of the guests are Chinese and this is China!
There's little in the way of food - a basic breakfast - but there's a huge choice of street food within a short distance.
The common area is quite large with good, free wifi. And beer is very cheap - thumbs up!
I liked the location, on the river but a short walk from the metro.
At the price it's difficult to find fault.

This hostel is situated by the riverside of the Pearl River, on the opposite riverside of the Shamian island where were, before, the colonial foreign quarters : to reach there, there is a ferry which crosses the river in a few minutes and at a very low cost. But they are now building a road tunnel acrss the river. Anyway! The road were stands this hotel is populated with several bars, without any interest. To reach there, one should get down at the Fangcun station of the Metro Line 3 and then walk some distance the very animated Luju Road with plenty of shops and at the end take to the right and the hotel is very near, with a strip of garden and trees, along the river. Quite easy to reach. The hotel itself is ok but nothing more. Coud be much better. I stayed in a dormitory with three "stowaway" beds. The washroom was common for all the people of the room, and nearly clean. There are "safe" boxes where to keep one's belongings but one has to bring/to buy a lock. There is also a kind of kitchen but the material is quite primitive with all kinds of people cooking their stuff. There is an AC system working more or less. That hotel is ok for a few days and at a "reasonable" price, although they increased the price 'cause there was the "Canton Fair" ! But the staff speaks "English".

Me and some friends stayed at RiverSide YHA only for a few hours sleep. We came from Macau in the evening and arrived in the hostel already a bit late. We checked-in in a smooth way, pay the rate accordingly with a booking and the hostel also arranged a taxi for 05:00 am, time we had to leave to the airport to catch a flight.
We stayed in a dorm with 3 bunk beds with a big safe box (very useful for a backpacker). The big incovenience was that the washroom was outside the room, in the end of the corridor. Plus, one of the toilets inside the room was out of order. The room temperature was so hot that was very dificult to fall asleep. Fortunately was only for a few hours. In my opinion the hostel is great for a few hours sleep just to fulfill the purpose of sleeping. I would not recommend the hostel for a few days in Guangzhou.

Room Tip: If you are with friends a dorm should be more fun. But some of them are female and male dorms, separ...

The hostel itself was good with a friendly staff.
However, our money got stolen from the inside of our room when we were visiting the city.
The money was in a hidden place, so someone must have gone through our belongings.
The staff checked the camera recordings with us, and we saw that one cleaning lady was the only person that went inside. The police came, we drove to their station, it was a funny experience though. However, the cleaning lady got away with this.
I would NOT recommend staying in this hostel unless there is a safe.

Ok first off this place is super cheap! I stayed in 6 bed dorms for only 5euros a night, its very clean, staff extremely friendly and spoke English. But the place is very dated looks like it was built in 70s and hasn't changed, the surrounding area seemed run down almost abandoned! Most the buildings along the riverside were shut!

I was only passing through Guangzhou for a day and this place served its purpose. It's very close to tube and easy get around.

Quite far away from the city center but about 800 meters from metro station. Double room was big and clean. Staff spoke english and were friendly.

If you really have to go to Guangzhou this is not a bad choice for accomodation.

This was quite simply the worst hostel experience we have had during our time in China.

Negative reviews of otherwise well received places often, in my opinion, say more about the people who stayed there than where they are reviewing.

To avoid coming across as a combination of deranged, angry and vindictive I'll simply state the problems we had at Riverside YHA so you can make your own mind up.

We stayed for three nights in a double room over the course of two separate stays - so had two different rooms.

The problems we encountered were:

1) Both rooms stank of sewage after we had flushed the toilet and used the shower. We raised this, and the hostel promised to look into it.

2) Both toilets blocked when we tried to flush them. Although they did eventually clear themselves, it required several flushes. In case you were wondering, no we weren't overloading the system.

3) One of the plug sockets sparked from round the back as we tried to use the hairdryer. There was a smell of burning afterwards.

4) We tried to order food on our first morning almost an hour into the allotted "breakfast" period. We were told the chef was yet to arrive but he may be there in half an hour.

I don't know if this was a one off as we didn't ever try again. However, I never witnessed anyone eating breakfast.

5) During our second stay, the key card for the door did not work. As we arrived after 7pm there was no one with expertise to fix the problem.

As a result, every time we wanted to go in or out of our room we had to get someone from reception to come up and let us in each time. We were trying to do laundry going to and from the room so this was a real nuisance.

6) The laundry. The single dryer was hopeless. Staff told us not to put too much in at once - but even when we split each of our two loads of washing in half and dried them for an hour each they was barely any difference from when they came out of the machine.

As we were leaving and couldn't hang the clothes up, we were forced to dry everything with a hairdryer.

The "40 - 50 minute wash" took well over an hour. We did not overload the machine.

In total, getting our clothes washed and dry(ish) took us well over six hours. We were up until 1am and down at the machine again at 7am the next morning.

7) The staff on reception were pleasant and helpful but very overworked. As a result, it was almost impossible to hold their attention for more than 20 seconds at a time. I can't blame them for that though.

SUMMARY: Overall, I am sure we were deeply unlucky and many guests who stay here won't have a bad word to say about Riverside YHA. Otherwise the hostel is generally pleasant, the rooms are nice and the beds are decent despite being generally very creaky. That said, we have experienced quite a list of problems.

There are many positive points which you'll read in other reviews on this page. I wouldn't disagree with a single one of them. Here I've merely outlined the problems we had.

I'll let you be the judge of whether our experiences are unique, whether I'm simply having a moan or whether you would be unduly bothered by our difficulties.

Personally, I could never recommend this place. In the interests of transparency and openness, I hope as many people as possible read this post before deciding whether to stay here.
