“Excellent value, clean and friendly, stay here if on a budget”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

The RiverSide YHA is one of the best hostels I've stayed at in China. the rooms were large, and clean. the location was perfect, the nearest Metro entrance is only down at the end of the road less than 5 min walk and the ferry is practically on the door step.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and spoke good English, they gave great directions and recommendations for sights and shopping.
We were so happy at this hostel that we extended our stay. The common area is large and comfortable, the only problem was with the internet connection which was intermittent there were also plenty of mosquitoes.
If you go to Guangzhou (which I would also recommend) this is the place to stay if your backpacking or on a budget.

Room Tip: while sleep was average the bed was one of the more comfortable in china

We traveled backpack 3 times to the same hostel. Its clean, good bed, clean linen, basic breakfast, helpful reception staff. The lady manager then was good and spoke English. They can get you airport taxis if you tell them in advance and recommend local sights if you ask. 10 mins. walk to the Metro Station. Along that walk, there are small shops that offer good, cheap breakfast local style (porridge, noodles). During lunch, there is a small dessert shop that's very good. In the evenings, there are street food available aka hot pot, barbecue oysters or fish. Even a Muslim man who sells barbecue meat on skewers. My son loves his food. Hostel don't have lifts so don't bring heavy luggage upstairs. You can go on the River Cruise in the evenings, take a short stroll (am/pm), watch locals do their morning dance exercise or take the ferry to the opposite side of river to the local market. Wonder quiet local area.

Room Tip: Upper floors are quieter. They have rooms facing the river front but windy in winter with cold breez...

Stayed there for only 1 night during my trip from Hong Kong to Guangxi province.

Excellent location, just outside of the centre of town, within walking distance from Metro Station (Fangcun station on line 1). In 30 minutes you are either in Guangzhou East Railway station or Guangzhou Railway Station, or in the centre of town. It is also within walking distance (100m) from the ferry across the river to Shamian Island.

Rooms are clean, good showers and Airco. There is a small restaurant and café, but I preferred eating in the centre of town.

This place is very good value for money.

Room Tip: Take a room at the back. There can be some noise at the front from passing ships on the river.

I stayed in this hostel for a night when I transited to Vancouver. By paying RMB65 you will get bed cover and blanket. If you want to use a towel, you need to pay another charge. This hostel is close to the police station and bar. It's easy for you to find food here. I stayed in the room with six comfortable beds and clean bathroom. It has AC, however the room is little bit dark. I slept in this room together with the other guest. It is the first time for me to sleep with stranger in the one room. It's good to stay here a night because you can enjoy the exotic Guangzhou at night by having a cruise on the Pearl River. It's better for you to reserve the hostel first by online before you get there, mostly in the peak season the rooms run out.

We stayed at RiverSide for only one night and found our stay to be comfortable but simply average. We paid 55 RMB per night (with Hosteling Internation membership cards - otherwise 65) for a 6-bed dorm with an ensuite bathroom. The room and bathroom were clean and there are good lockers in the room yet there were no bed side lamps or shelving as well as no wifi in the room. The common foyer area is very nice with lots of seating, pool table, TV and wifi access however the connection was not the greatest and it was very hot even with all the fans. There is food on offer for a bit of a hefty price as well as a small common kitchen area with stove, microwave and fridge - which was gooood!

As for the location, the hostel sits right on the river front with virtually no traffic outside so it is nice and quiet. It's around a 10 minute walk to the closest Subway station (Fangcun) and there's all sorts of local eats close by. We found this location to be pretty mediocre as it was a minimum 10 min subway ride to anywhere decent we wanted to go, which wasn't very practical for us wanting to be in the heart of the action.

The staff we found to be very helpful and friendly yet upon check in weren't shown to our room and we needed to make our own beds, as well as return the sheets when we checked out; I was expecting better hospitality for the price we were paying for the hostel - even though the hostel does have a very hotel appearance about it.

Overall RiverSide was a nice hostel but for the price we were paying and the average location, I would search elsewhere if returning to Guangzhou. Thanks.

I liked this hostel. The building is new and spacious. The room we were given was huge and very clean, I found the bed very comfortable (but I like hard beds). All in all it felt like a 3 star hotel, it didn't feel like a youth hostel. It was easy to get to it with the underground system, just a 5 minute walk. Located in a very quiet part of town, facing the river. Staff weren't your typical YHA smiley friendly types, but they were very helpful.

we ask for an information (where get a bus for macau) and the guy at the desk was extremely rude...but really rude...and the other people of the stuff doesn't say nothing...

later we ask to another person of the staff to use the computer for internet connection (you have to pay for the service)...he check bored 30 seconds and say "sorry...doesn't work"...that's it...

the place looks like a hospital and doesn't looks like the pictures (but this is not the problem...we stay in really worst place)

but we think you cannot be unfriendly like this!!!!

the location is amazing...no taxi driver was driveing us there...
