Guangzhou Hotel
Ranked #163 of 3,480 Hotels in Guangzhou
Reviewed April 19, 2012

As the first big hotel in Guangzhou it has certainly had it's day but is a quaint 3 star best. To get to it ask the taxi driver to take you to 'Gwarnjo Pingwa'. Taxi drivers neither speak nor read English and for some reason even have trouble reading the Chinese version of this name. Mention it as phonetically and it's like watching a secret code get cracked. Go figure. Theynhave been undertaking room upgrading for some time and I would suggest that you refuse any room under floor 13. Pay the extra for a Superior Business Room or above. The are works near the river presently so if you want the view of the Pearl River which is wonderful at night I recommend a good set of silicone earplugs as the building works start early and finish late.
The reno'd rooms are clean if not basic. There is now a safe in the room and a fridge if you are lucky enough to score one that is cold. Water pressure in the shower is excellent but the nozzle must have been bought from a Chinese 2 yuan shop as mine squirted only horizontally.
I had a king? Bed and yes it is strangely firm but surprisingly comfy.
The restaurants in the building are very local for both breakfast and dinner. Across from the seven eleven a few doors up is a famous Chinese seafood restaurant. Food he is exquisite and I eat there whenever I stay here. Food choices are in English and Chinese with good coloured pictures and a full range from basic sweet and sour to the more exotic. Perfect for fussy eaters who won't hold back the adventurous.
At the boutique shopping centre across the street above the Metro is a McDonalds (McCafe) with free wifi-(ask for the password) and a Cafe de Coral both of which ar entirely in Chinese so you
just point at what you want. There is very little English bordering on none spoken in this area.
The Day Spa is a hoot and a must visit. Very very cheap. Level 4 is for foot massages that comes with a clothed massage for not much. Here they will try to upsell you into a pedicure which you probably need anyway by then and also ear cleaning and candling. Go for it as it's all cheap and a real experience. I was with a couple of other girls and the whole thing had us rolling in hysterics. Cold drinks are complimentary and it is customary to tip around 20 rmb.
Level 5 is a whole other world and frequented by males predominantly but if you are happy to do the girl nudie shower area thing with your girlfriends, be given pink short pj's to wear and go hang out on big comfy chairs in a large communal lounge area while waiting for your massage then you can't beat the value for the experience. While there you can surf the net, watch tv, cold drinks free, alcohol charged, manicures, pedicures etc., all on offer while there and no restrictions
on time spent there.
Local shopping areas are shoes wholesale past seven eleven on other side of street and keep going to a solid ten minute walk to Beijing Lu which is a large more commercialized shopping area. On every corner they will try to get you to wander off with them to the usual copy watch haunts and this can get tedious. If you come out of the hotel and hug to the left you will see huge malls of fashion accessories with more diamantes than you ever need to see in a lifetime.
For trade fairs Guangzhou Hotel offer free shuttle service, metro trains are across the road and taxis everywhere so basic value for money this place is great. Again just ask the concierge to write in Chinese every place you want to go before heading out including Guangzhou East Railway Station or Airport.
Last word on the GE railway station if this is where you embark from probably Hong Kong keep walking until you get to the official taxi rank out the from of the train station, get in the queue and go from there.

Room Tip: Above 12th floor city view while river works undertaken due to noise.

Hotel is about 130 yuan by taxi from the airport. It is located right above line 2 of the metro which can connect you to other metros to get to practically anywhere in Guangzhou. The best thing about its location is its proximity to wholesale shopping places around Yide Road. Onelink Plaza with 8 floors of toys, accessories, furnishings at competitive wholesale and retail prices. It is air conditioned, less crowded and generally a less stressful place to browse and buy. Further down is the dry foods depot-- scallops, shark fins, dried fruits and the like. Wholesale shoe places choke the streets near the hotel and beyond Onelink. Around Guangzhou rail station is the place to shop for apparel and watches and these are just 3 or 4 metro stops down. Be aware though that metro stations are huge and significant walking is involved even when a place is near a metro station. Luckily cabs are cheap and there are cyclos for the short distance rides.
As for the hotel itself, it is barely 3 stars. The furniture, carpeting are serviceable if old. The beds are rock hard, like sleeping on box springs. Housekeeping put down two layers of blanket on top of the bed but I could still feel the spine of the bed. Truly the worst hotel bed I have slept on. I asked for even more blankets for use as padding but was told each room has only two blankets. So I ended up sleeping on the comforter on top of everything else on my bed. I had a nice, quiet, spacious room with a river view. There was construction near the hotel but the noise is not heard in my room. Water pressure for bathing is weak. Breakfast buffet at 98 yuan is at a restaurant with a spectacular view. The buffet itself is almost entirely Asian and no cereals or milk. The orange juice is orange soda. There is another restaurant that serves dim sum a la carte. The quality is below average and service is way below average. The same goes for service at their massage place. Whereas the bell boys and the front desk people are first rate, the restaurant and spa people function like communist turtles. All in all, if your interest is wholesale shopping, this hotel maybe acceptable. I regret not booking at the landmark hotel which is right across the street because it was marginally more expensive. One final thing-- there appears to be only one staff person with good English skills, for the rest, it is poor to non-existent. Another final thing, many people tend to congregate at the front of the hotel chatting away in loud voices.

Stayed there the week before Chinese New Year. Lots of touts outside the hotel.
Near the One Link Wholesale place. Property is very dated, rooms have a musty smell & beds are rock hard.

Room Tip: Walk way is very dark , stay away from lift but not too far in as walking alone at night can be quit...

The hotel property is dated. However, the clean and comfortable bed and its spacious room may be the reason to stay here for its comparative price. The Reception Team at the counter speak limited English but are helpful and efficient. Checking-in process takes just a short while after your pp documents are copied. Prebooking is recommended for quick check-in. The rooms with a River view are better. We took the following direction to locate the hotel. From Baiyun Airport, take Metro Line 3(Orange) and switch to Line 2 (Blue) at JiaHewanggang Station. Continue the journey on Metro Line 2 until you reach Haizhu Square Station. Exit B3 and walk to the hotel via the underground tunnel. Total travel time from airport to Haizhu Station is about 50 mins. In-room facilities include a mini fridge, good TV, internet connection, SAFE, powerful staning hot/cold shower, and free coffee/tea/bottled water and standard hotel toiletries. Overall, it is a good hotel for same price range. The 3rd floor chinese restaurant serving dim-sum and chinese dishes are perpetually crowded. Waiting for a table may take 20 minutes or more. Food quality may not be the BEST of the world!

Room Tip: River View rooms are better. The higher room is excellent.

I have a china trip last March, I booked hotel via expedia with some discount code. The room is pretty old but it's big. the location is close to the subway and I can walk distance to Beijing lu walking street. there's a convenience shop close to the hotel, there's a big bridge across the big river in front of the hotel, this hotel is good but I feel that the receptionist is lack of smile. I have been waiting for long time just to ask them a question about taxi. they should have more polite than this at least they should pay respect and always give a hand to the tourist. so far, If the price is low, i'll come again but if the price is averaged compare to others nearby, I might change to stay there.

Room Tip: poor staff

While local Chinese hotels often have the reputation of not always meeting 'world class' standards, I was hoping that this hotel, for it's price would give me basic decent service and be clean. Wrong!

We checked in late, 10pm, and found the room we were allocated HAD NOT BEEN MADE from the previous guests. It smelt like cigarettes and was missing the extra bed we had paid for. When we asked reception to give us a new room, the woman told us the previous guests had left late and told us to go away for dinner and come back. My mother had to argue with the woman and eventually we were allocated a new room.

On our last night we asked the concierge for advice regarding transport to the airport, since we had quite a lot of luggage and were worried we could not fit into one taxi. We had an early flight and wanted everything to go smoothly getting to the airport. He told us we could rent a larger vehicle, asked us for a deposit and gave us a receipt with details.

The following morning we came down and the driver was not there. We waited almost half and hour, and when asked the manager for a refund for our deposit were told we could not get the money back. The manager told us he did not know the staff member and that there were dodgy people all around the hotel, even INSIDE THE HOTEL, INCLUDING HIS OWN STAFF.

He then argued with my mother, making no apologies, while openly admitting it was most likely one of his staff members behind the desk had scammed us. He refused to refund us the deposit and implied it was our fault we were scammed! We were so furious but had to catch a plane so we just let it go. I will never stay at a cheaper option hotel again.

Avoid staying here if you can. I regret going for a cheaper option, and am dismayed by the terrible service.

Room Tip: Lock your suitcases and do not leave valuables around.
