I stayed at the Gitic Riverside Hotel Guangzhou for one night at the very reasonable rate of 358 RMB (roughly $US 50), which included a river view, breakfast and in-room broadband internet. At that rate, this hotel ticks all the boxes. It has an attractive pool on a terrace overlooking the Pearl River, a well-equipped gym, and spacious rooms, albeit furnished to a 3- or 3.5-star standard. The room furnishing could admittedly use an update – the wallpaper motif in our room featured dogs flying in hot air balloons, and the panelling is clearly from decades past – but the overall effect is not altogether unpleasant or off-putting, and the room was thoroughly clean. The breakfast buffet was on par with regular hotel fare – a great selection of bread and eggs made to order, among the typical buffet spread. The hotel also does an excellent buffet dinner – for a steep 188 RMB per person. Inside the hotel there is an ICBC bank and the G.F. Worldwide Friendship Travel Agency which can book train tickets / flights / tours for what seemed to be a reasonable rate and have tickets delivered up to your room.

The service was irreproachable. Efficient and knowledgeable reception staff and pleasant personnel in the restaurant and fitness areas. I had a problem getting my in-room internet working, and the desk attendant sent up a technician immediately who was able to fix the problem. One suggestion though - this place needs a lounge area. There is conspicuously nowhere to sit in the lobby.

The location is good - directly on the bank of the river, and about three blocks away from the south end of the famous Beijing Road pedestrian street, which can be reached via a stroll along the riverside promenade. Several blocks further west is the closest metro station - Haizhu station, in under two kilometres from the hotel.

Overall, this is a value option that would appeal to budget travellers who wants more than the basic comforts but can’t shell out for a luxury or international brand.

the riverside hotel is old, a bit worn out, but for the money is good. about $100 aud / night.
its on the river, is close to Beijing road, the main shopping place, and Haizu square, the closest metro.
rooms are a bit tired, dark, but the base room is still large, king size bed, big bathroom, with separate shower, bath.. two of us can shower together ok. bed is hard, but comfortable, linen is clean, changed daily, and has big tv, and free internet .its a chinese hotel though, not for anyone who doesnt know some chinese i think. restaurant menus are all in chinese, i had a coffee in the lounge, that cost 37 rmb,, thats alot for china, when you can get a macdonalds meal, chips, coke and burger for 18 rmb.
only cnn, and one movie channel in english, no real lounge area if you just want to read a book.
its close to restaurants,, with one very good one accross the road, aunties,.. a nice bakery type shop downstairs with rolls etc for 3.5 rmb. bank next door for currency exchange.. overall very nice for the price.. half the price of the china hotel,, but nice anyway. about 3.5 stars i think

The hotel is located right on the Pearl River. It is a quite a large hotel. Was first impression was of stale smoke, which was a little off putting. The rooms are very large, two double beds. A little outdated though, I got the feeling it needed a bit of an update. The bathroom was fine, clean, what I would expect from a Chinese hotel. However our toilet was broken and didnt flush. The maintenence people tried to fix it twice but couldnt. They also couldnt communicate with us as spoke no english. We werent able to change rooms.
Staff were very friendly. Had breakfast in the restaurant, which catered to many nationalities needs.
Wee were often reminded to "look after your posessions" as petty crime is a problem in the area.
