She & He Hotel Apartment Guangzhou River Class
Ranked #1,268 of 3,503 Hotels in Guangzhou
Reviewed November 2, 2013

I have been at this hotel for just under one month. I came to Guangzhou for the Canton Fair and to visit factories
I will start with the positives- I have a really nice view of the Pear River from my room on the 11th floor. The room is spacious and bright.

Now the negatives:
The location sucks. While it is located across the river from the Pazhou Complex, home of the Canton fair, getting there is not as easy as one would imagine. Because the hotel is located south of the entrance to the bridge, taxis and shuttle busses have to double back a few km in heavy traffic to be able to cross the bridge. This adds 20 minutes to a half hour to the crossing. The same is true when returning from the fair.

Taxis have trouble finding the place. I have a card with the address on it and a rudimentary map but I have never come across a taxi that can easily find it. Very frustrating.

A taxi to Central Guangzhou is about 22-24 yuan, not expensive.

There is only one dumpling restaurant in the immediate area. There are a few grocery stores in the area as well as a few very expensive wine shops. If you are a beer drinker, you're in luck but if you're a wine drinker, buy it at your airport before you come to China because you won't find a decent bottle of wine under 35USD here.

The metro is located a good 15 minute walk from the hotel. The walk is dirty, dusty and loud, you are walking along a major traffic route. Be prepared to dodge motor cycles, bikes and other pedestrians on the sidewalks. Not unbearable but not fun either.

Most of the hotel staff does not speak English. Some of them speak broken english but many of them do not speak a word. Very frustrating, especially when you have a basic question. Have never once been smiled at or greeted when coming into the hotel.

Although the room is listed as an apartment equipped with a kitchen, there is not one spoon, not one fork, no glasses, no cups, no plates, no pots or pans...... nothing. Can not see the point of having an "apartment" if you cannot even make a cup of coffee unless you go out and buy cups, spoons, pots, etc. The store closest to the apartment sells all of these things but why they are not supplied is a mystery to me.

The bed is the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept on in my life. There is absolutely no padding on the mattress, it is basically a piece of wood. I wish I was exaggerating. After the first night, I had to make a trip to Ikea to purchase a mattress pad that helped a bit.

I would also suggest bringing or buying your own towel. The towels are quite thin and not very absorbent at all. The diesel-scented fabric softener is not very appealing. No face cloths. No soap, no shampoo.

In one month, my room was cleaned four times. I have taken to putting my garbage in the hall and have them deal with it themselves. I have seen two massive cockroaches in the room.

The pool and gym are not free and the hours are not ideal for someone looking for a morning workout. I think the hours are 2PM (?)to 8PM with a half hour closed for dinner. Not exactly convenient if you are waking up at 3 AM because of jet-lag.

The "business center" has to be seen to be believed. Two guys smoking in a cement floored storeroom (old mattresses and broken furniture) will print a document for you but were not able to fax something for me.

I would strongly recommend staying in the Central Business District or the area of the Garden Hotel if you are coming to Guangzhou for business. There are many more restaurants and shops and things to do in these areas. I wish I would have known that before.

I have given it a 2 star rating because this is supposed to be an apartment which to my way of thinking comes with crockery, pots/pans, knives forks etc this had nothing, it was like a showroom for selling. Finding it is hard. There is nothing around ie coffee shops etc and a bit out of the town.

Hi

Very difficult for taxis to find address has changed. If you are expecting Hotel Entrance forget it .It is within large gated complex.
Room very large for China , very well divided off spaces. Bed a little hard but nice linen and very clean.
Good wardrobe space and good tv and loung area.
Excellent bathroom and very clean, fresh towels daily.
Had kitchen with washing machine that was very handy as we were travelling from various places.
Kitchen lacked untensils , no spoon or knives and forks or plates . When asked they were provided.

Very dull lighting and very hard to find. A little out of the way from metro and main attractions but taxis very cheap! Make sure you have address in Chinese and get cards with map when checking in!!!

Water was supplied daily which we thought was nice touch until we checked out and was charged for this, very common in China! Good local shop selling bread , beer just outside the gates.

Room Tip: Nice to have river view
