“Excellent facility with Terrible staff”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

I stayed at the J Hotel with my family for three nights. Unlike the other reviewers I had no problem in getting to the hotel. Cab drivers from all parts of town were able to take us directly to the hotel.
The rooms are incredibly large with tasteful interiors BUT the staff can't understand a word of english. They cannot help you give you directions, plan your day , travel within the city etc.
What really put me off was the fact they sold us a city map in english that had a print price of RMB 6 for RMB 10. That was a bad marketing move. Trying to make 4 RMB from a guest was being penny wise & pound foolish !

Room Tip: Despite the Rooms I would not recommend the hotel to Non Chinese travelers.

I traveled to Guangzhou with my girl friend in early March 2013 and the room was booked by her on exxxxdia.com (pre-paid).

I took a a thorough train from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and arrived Tianhe (Guangzhou East) station directly. Prior to arrival, I called the hotel to confirm our booking and asked for advice in terms of how to walk to the hotel from the train station.

The hotel is a bit far (15-min walk) from the train station (exit F) but not hard to find. If you hit exit F at Tianhe station, turn right and walk to a long & narrow straight street. Once you are standing on that street, you will be able to see a tall building (others are relatively short) at the far end of the street and that's the hotel. If you use Google map, you may not be able to find the hotel location. However, you can search "Tianshou Mansion" and it is right next to the hotel.

In terms of hotel service, I had a bad first impression as the hotel might not receive client booking via exxxxia.com very often and the staff took a considerable while (~10 mins) to confirm my booking. Also, I suspect most mainland Chinese are "post-paid" which means they only pay the room during check-out. While I was waiting for the staff to finish my check-in process, I saw a few Chinese holding piles of cash to pay their rooms. [seems they don't like to use credit card at all].

Our room quality is much better than expected. I thought the hotel would be a bit old as it seems so from outside but in fact the room is recently renovated with a new TV and a very comfortable bed. I would personally rate this hotel to 4-star / 5-star (just for the room, not for other services). No wifi inside the room but a LAN cable is provided. A technical staff came to my room quickly after I called the concierge for some network issues. The room service is excellent.

Chinese-styled buffet breakfast is served on 2/F and the food is tasty.

Overall, the hotel provides a good value for money and the only drawback is that you need to walk too far (15-min) from the train / subway station to the hotel.

Better for you to speak Mandarin with the staff as I saw a foreign tourist had a difficult time to communicate what he wanted with the hotel staff.

The pricing factor and the new room gave me an instant yes to make a booking. The location is not that bad however the taxi driver will never find it. I took more than 4 taxies and none of them know the location of this hotel. The fact that the hotel entrance is located in a completely wrong direction. The b'fast quality can be improved with some western influence as it's 100% local. Shuttle service is available but advance booking is needed. The only area with wifi service is the lobby area but it is full of mosquitoes. You can hardly call a taxi to the hotel either as many cannot find the location. Therefore the staff would rather ask you to go to the main street to flag one. If you are just looking for good new room with reasonable price without considering the factors that I mentioned, it's indeed a good deal. Otherwise, you will be dissappointed and it is not so family friendly.

Paid 246rmb a night. Clean and comfortable. Soft bed. Only bad is the location. Nothing much nearby..Taxi's won't know the hotel's location. 15 min walk to US Embassy and Guangzhou East Station. Only 2 elevators and sometimes can be a drag to wait. Suggest a lower level

Yeah, cheap modern and clean hotel.
Many rooms ,2 lifts so long long wait for a start.
Breakfast only catered for chinese, make the most of eggs on toast.
No business facilities, not even a fax machine or capabilities to print from email.
All chinese tv channels-not even one english speaking!
Just like a quick "smash and dash" hotel on a late night in town, but with a cleaner that does her bit each day.
Good for Guangzhou east train station and most of the staff are very good-though language slight problem.
Went for coffee one night on 2nd floor restaurant (they call it) again all cantonese food, was charged £3.60 - They have just got it all wrong in my opinion.
No iron - was charged £55 for clean and press - Suit and shirts ...x3 boxer shorts £12.60!!!
No Gym or fitness centre-though it does not claim to have, but with 4* rating you would think it would.
Couldn't work out air conditioning as all in chinese with no translation.
Nothing to do at all in this hotel but sleep!
I wouldn't stay here again.

Room Tip: Not facing railway track.

Nicely decorated, comfortable very clean room ...Great staff... Very good Chinese style breakfast ...Fifteen minutes walk to Guangzhou East Railway Station...Bit tricky access to the main entrance by taxi, but only for the first time... Lot of great restaurants around Railway Station... Guangzhou Metro is a great way to move around ...
