Let's see the dinosaurs and whales together! It's free!

The area where the museum located is a new district surrounded by grand public buildings, e.g. Library. The visit of the museum is free. Just show your ID/passport. Apart from showing the history and culture of Guangzhou. One shouldn't miss the 4th floor where there is an internal stairs connecting to the 3rd floor. You will see dinosaurs, whales and sharks there!

I've been to the Guangdong Provincial Museum 5 times. It opened just one year ago as part of Guanzghou's makeover centerpiece Pearl River New Town Square for the Asian Games. It is one of a cluster of well designed buidlings that include the Guangdong Opera House and several other museums. The structure, designed by Rocco Associates, is like a shattered cube. Inside and out, the building looks great, although there's stuff that was certainly added or subtracted without the architects knowing.

The exhibits are some of the best I've seen in China and were obviously either influenced by or designed by the same people who did the Hong Kong History Museum. Permanent exhibits include inkstones, gilt wood carving, porcelain and the centerpieces, Guangdong History and Culture and Guangdong Natural History. The Whale and Dinosaur room is really well done. In general, the pieces on display are excellent, the bilingual descriptions are good and the overall atmosphere makes it a great indoor escape.

Almost everyone can enjoy this museum. However, there are quite a few little things that make this museum just average when it should be great. Some important things seem to have been left out. For families with kids, other than the stunning dinosaur room and some eye-catching culture stuff, there are no hands-on exhibits or activities designed for kids or young people, when it would be so easy to do. There are no pamphlets or handouts.

After a year, it seems the place is already losing its shine. Today when I went, still 2 hours before closing time, most of the interactive features and multi-media dsiplays were either off. In many of the cases, lights were out, ruining the display and atmosphere. Also, after more than a year open, the restaurant space remains empty with bad over-priced snacks being the only food. The big problem with that is not only are there no food options nearby, you'd have to wait in line again to get back in even if you did go out. Finally, they have a website, but it is mostly deadlinks and only has simplified Chinese; the links to other languages are all dead.

If you are in Guangzhou I do recommend the Guangdong Museum, as long as the line's not to long. It is free and definately worth a look. However, if they let the quality slide, like it seems they are, I will eventually rather go to Hong Kong for a museum visit rather than re-visit the Guangdong Museum.
