Xinghai Concert Hall is a fabulous venue and so is the smaller theatre on the back side of the main concert hall. Good location as many GZ bus lines take you there: B21, 89, 194. It's right beside the Starbucks Coffee on Ersha Island. Here's the web site: http://www.concerthall.com.cn/

While it doesn't carry the big names or headline making architecture of the Guangzhou Opera House, this quiet venue is spectacular for an evening concert and houses some of the best music competitions in China (as it's namesake is the Mozart of Modern China). The inside is beautiful and seating is steep, offering great acoustics, and the outside even has its own special flair that adds its own unique touch to the Ersha Island skyline as well as the Pearl River water front.

I have been to maybe a dozen concerts here and always had an enjoyable experience. The concert hall is beautiful. Tickets start at 60rmb but those often sell out. We usually get decent seats for 100rmb or 160rmb. We always go to the concert hall and buy the tickets there from the box office. The symphony is very good. As a classical musician myself, I wouldn't say they are world-class but they are very enjoyable.

Also, the biggest perk about seeing a concert here is that the ushers do a good job of keeping the audience in check. I have seen other performances in Guangzhou where the audience is very rude (talking, on their phones, taking pictures with flash, eating, etc). While there is always rude behavior, the ushers go over to people and make them stop. Overall, the audience behavior does not disrupt the music much. Choose Xinghai Concet Hall if you want a good musical experience in Guangzhou!

Er Sha Island is quiet and pleasant. Everything is nice because only wealthy people live there. There is a big park in the center and you can also walk along the river and listen to street musicians at night. The closest MTR is Wuyangcun, exit B. From there it is a short 10rmb taxi ride. Just say "Er sha dao" and you will get to the island. You can also walk. If you walk straight out of exit B just continue straight towards the river. Cross part of the river, then you will see a car exit ramp to Er Sha Dao. Walk a little past this ramp and you will see pedestrian stairs that lead down. Head to the opposite side of the island, walk down by the water river, heading away from canton tower and then you will see Xinghai Concert hall on your right.
